This is quite possibly the most amazing book/Bible study I've ever read! I participated in a group study with this book, but it could easily be done on your own. It does have a video series (purchased separately) to go along with it, but isn't included with this book. This workbook/study includes questions, explanations, scripture readings, etc. It "seamlessly" flows through the Bible, a little at a time, offering simple, easy to understand, guidance. This is actually such a great study, that I'm hoping to take the class offered at my Church, again! I'd highly recommend this to anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the Bible overall, as well as the individual books within it. Angie Smith does a fantastic job using personal humor, battles, and scriptures meaningful to her, to showcase God's love, His Word, and the truth in all of that. Beautifully done Mrs. Smith, beautifully done.

--------Pros:---------easy to read-likely GREAT for super new believers-also likely great for those one may be trying to evangelize-may be a great backbone for a class for children and youth-could even be considered a good primer for people who may have forgotten some things--------Cons:---------not deep-[which she said in the 1st video, purchased separately, she wasn't sure she'd have much to offer one who grew up in church]-too informal at times-could have been much shorter and still had the same effect-lame, for want of a better word, questionsHumble Advice --> Give it a try if you don't understand how they Old and New relate and connect...however, if you do understand this connection/relation, don't expect to learn much if anything you don't already know. Also, Dear Publisher -> a full book that doesn't require watching videos would be nice too...i.e. gifting to evangelize...

Growing up in a Christian home, I heard the token Bible stories my entire life and when the ladies from our church decided to go through this book for Bible Study, I thought I would have an okay time, but I didn't plan on learning anything new.Boy was I wrong! This was a viewpoint changing book for me! I learned so much and my eyes were opened on so many aspects of the Bible! What a valuable resource! I would highly recommend this study to ANYONE! If you have been saved your whole life or if you were saved yesterday, you have something to glean from this book.My daughter and I will be going through the teen study together this fall!I can't say enough good things about this book. Thank you so much, Mrs. Smith for pouring out your heart and making yourself vulnerable in writing this book!

I've just starting this. My friend recommended it to me. The author really breaks things down for the reader. I struggle understand the Bible at times and have always given up. This opened my eyes to what all I've been missing. I can't wait to finish and start reading the Bible again. Everything is going to make so much more sense. If you're creative like me then you'll like the margins. I doodle and write comments on the sides. Also, it has a video series you can watch. I'm skipping that part for now.

I absolutely love this bible study. I’m brand new to the Christian faith. Growing up Catholic, I never picked up the Bible and read through it. It sat in the house I grew up in, collecting dust. Ever since I’ve opened up heart, I’ve realized it’s important to read God’s word. This book helps complete beginners like myself understand the Bible more. I no longer feel confused when I read the Old Testament because I’ve studied the major details of it. The major details help me understand all of the minor details. Before this, I didn’t even know about the 12 tribes. Now, I know what and where they originated from. If you’re not confident in your knowledge of the Bible, this book is for you!

To be fair, I read the first 2 weeks worth and then returned it. This review applies to that portion.- Basic questions, maybe 50% make you think a little, mostly just answer it for you in the text- Surface-level intro to Bible knowledge, felt like a children's book without pictures- Reads like a millenial blogpost- Pretty graphic design (not joking, this part was A-plus)I just expected a little more theology in the sense of scholarship and reasoning. It strives to be basic in the sense of accessibility but misses too much substance in its quest for simplicity.

I did this bible study on my own, I actually didn't use the DVD and i may go back and watch later. This was a good bible study for someone who doesn't know a lot about the bible and wants to get a better understanding of how it all goes together. Probably not the best one for someone who is well versed in the bible.

I can't rate this Bible study highly enough! I just finished leading this Bible study at my church and was amazed at how wonderfully Angie Smith worked through the entire Bible. I had ladies who have read the Bible cover to cover multiple times stating how much they had still learned and pieced together through this study. Seamless gave me such comfort in my Bible knowledge and really sparked a fire in me to continue to dig deeper into His Word. The study's focus on lineage and prophecies helped so much, as well as the sidebar notes that clarify some of the people and events to patch the Books together seamlessly. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone looking for a quality Bible study!

Drinking in America: Our Secret History, by Susan Cheever

Review

"A fascinating look at the place and function of alcohol throughout American history...[Cheever] offers a colorful portrait of a society that, like her own family, has been indelibly shaped by its drinking habits. An intelligently argued study of our country's 'passionate connection to drinking.'"―Kirkus Reviews"Susan Cheever offers a humane but unsentimental view of our nation's inebriated past in DRINKING IN AMERICA. To excuse the pun, it's an addictive read full of wit and verve, revealing the deep influence of alcohol on many of our country's most significant moments, from the landing at Plymouth Harbour, to the Kennedy Assassination and Watergate. This is terrific social history but not as it's usually told, and all the better for it."―Amanda Foreman, author of Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire (winner of the Whitbread) and A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War"Cheever's central observation is fascinating...The melting pot, it seems, was also a mixing bowl."―Publishers Weekly"Insightful...well-researched and well-developed...An engrossing, in-depth examination of the profound ways alcohol and drinking have shaped and contributed to American history."―Shelf Awareness"Cheever is full of such shocking and often delightful revelations of a history we never learned in school."―Newsday"I can't stop raving (soberly!) about Susan Cheever's new book... It is both enlightening and frightening. A brilliant and important addition to our understanding of what goes wrong and what can continue to go wrong in a world dominated by the most deadly legal liquid ever invented."―Judy Collins"Compelling...[a] brisk drinker's companion to US history, which runs a black light over the archives to ask: who was loaded, and why did it matter?... It's the fourth of Wilson's famous 12 steps that made it common practice for sober folk to dig into their own pasts in order to articulate the role of alcohol - to create a 'searching and fearless moral inventory' - and with DRINKING IN AMERICA, Cheever submits the US to a similar investigation. Along the way, we see a country struggling to negotiate its freedoms, nurtured by alcohol and undone by it as well....This approach can be illuminating, turning those sepia-toned historical figures in wigs into uncertain young men with tankards of rum in their hands."―Los Angeles Review of Books"Cheever serves up a sober cocktail of American history...offers up sideways views that are intriguing."―Associated Press"Full of compelling ideas...Cheever is smart, perceptive and disciplined...Her Nixon chapter in particular is alternately horrifying and delightful, and paints a compelling picture of the monstrous complexity of a 'great man.'"―Buffalo News"Vivid...some of the book's most affecting moments arrive when Cheever discusses her family's drinking problems. "―The San Francisco Chronicle

This book was a great disappointment. I am glad it was free and I paid nothing for it. If a book claims to be some kind of history, I expect that the author has made some kind of effort to present history accurately. From the beginning, the author stated many historical inaccuracies. And in the latter part of the book, it became evident she was presenting as historical facts things that she THOUGHT might be true just to prove her points. It was also clear that she used people she just did not like as examples of drunks. She totally lost me when she blamed the Iraq war on Pres. Bush's drinking. I thought that war was a mistake but really? He had quit drinking long before that. What ever this book is, it is not history.

I was really looking forward to this book, but am now really disappointed. My major problems have been noted by other reviewers, primarily a disjointed timeline (bouncing back and forth time-wise in seemingly random fashion), and worse in my view, factual errors. For example, the writer states that gold was found in California when John Sutter found some flakes while crossing a river. The well-known fact (at least well-known to anyone who has actually studied the history of gold in California) was that John Marshall discovered gold at the site of Sutter's Mill in the Sierra. Another 'error' in my view is the writer stating that Meriwether Lewis attended Washington & Lee University, when it was not named that until after the death of Robert E. Lee. To sum up, I find the book poorly written, and because of its many factual errors, not the kind of history one would expect to find from a widely published and recognized author. The publisher should give serious consideration to employing fact-checkers before publishing any further 'histories' by the author in question.

More of an anti-drinking commentary than a history of alcohol in the US. The author jumps all over on the timeline of history referencing future, past and current events in the same paragraph. Not what I was looking for.

Am not certain a reader can love a book of this type. It is well written and deals with a history of drinking habits which need to be written. It needs to be included on US History course bibliographies.

This was eye opening but made so much “Common Sense “ about our history.

The history was interesting, but not as broad I had hoped. The commentary on the historical vignettes seemed to try to tone down tragedy of the history. It is an interesting and easy read. I would try to borrow it before buying it.

This book read as interestingly as a novel. I am so much more clear now on why we are the way we are here in America. Going from the initial landing of the Mayflower up through our history until current times, the author stunningly describes the origins of our attitudes toward and uses of alcohol from a health perspective, as well as a social, moral, and political standpoint. It was a great learning experience, entertainingly written, and I recommend it highly. It adds an important dimension to understanding our history and the men who were influential in guiding our nation.

Apparently Susan Cheever and her father both had or have problems handling alcohol and this is how she addresses her familial problem of alcohol abuse. It was interesting as we moved into the last 150 or so years of alcohol in America, all the famous drunks happened to be Republicans. We don't hear a word about Teddy Kennedy's problems with alcohol nor other infamous Democrat boozers. After the first 75 years of history the book degenerates into a diatribe against Republican boozers. Sorry, Susan, a recounting of history should be even-handed and your book is not.
