About the Author

Barbara R. Bjorklund is an adjunct professor at the Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter, Florida, where she teaches courses in developmental psychology, social psychology, and forensic psychology. She has a Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from the University of Georgia and has published research on a variety of developmental psychology topics, including memory development and eye-witness testimony. She also has worked as a columnist and features writer for Parents Magazine and has authored books on child development. In 2000 she took over the fourth edition of Journey of Adulthood from Helen Bee and has authored each following edition. Parts of these books have been written in Germany, Spain, and New Zealand where Dr. Bjorklund and her husband served as visiting professors. Her interests outside the office include photography and travel. She is co-founder of the Book Club in the Farms, which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Dr. Bjorklund is a third generation Floridian and lives in Jupiter Farms, Florida, with her husband, David Bjorklund. They are frequent visitors to their 9 grandchildren living in Florida and Virginia. They are expecting numbers 10 and 11 (twins) in April 2014.

Good for basic explosive concepts, and advanced chemical characteristics of specific explosives, but not much in between. Good primer for emergency managers, or chemists seeking detailed information, but not particularly useful explosives users or first responders.

Great book!

I was looking for of a historical survey of energetic materials. This dealt more with the technical side. If you are into physical chemistry, this will interest you. As I was not, this was not that interesting to me.

Very informative

I purchased this book as a sophomore chemistry student. It's easy to read and follow the text, and lacks the boring textbook aspect. Great book for the serious student, or even professionals looking for a brush up on explosives. Covers the history, and the future or explosives, as well as everything in between.

You really need a background in chemistry to understand everything in this book

I was disappointed by the book as named, and expected much more in the way of chemistry of explosives.Unfortunately, what I found was mostly thermodynamic data and equations and chemical "reaction" equations that often did not even include structures, just formulae, reminiscent of high-school (USA) chemistry equations. In this respect, this book is most certainly NOT for the organic chemist. I do not believe a single curly arrow is to be found in this book !I would like to point out in particular my displeasure with the way that chemical structure is depicted in this book. Unfortunately the author appears to be unfamiliar with the ChemDraw application or other similar drawing programs. It would be polite to say that some chemical reaction schemes are painful to look at. Take for example the reaction scheme 7.10 on page 131 (search for "hexamethylenetetramine" to find it in the book preview): I have never seen a 6-6 fused ring system look like 2 cyclobutane rings fused with unholy angle strain, but lo and behold there it is. These are the types of chemical structures i expect from the 1800's or from a old biology textbook, but not a modern chemistry book!I would like to note that I was particularly disappointed with the caliber of the graphics included within the book (structures, as noted above and otherwise). The few schemes that are present in the book look as if they've been drawn in MS Paint or a similarly simple program and lack the finesse I expect from modern books.In summary,this is much more a physics book concerning explosives, dominated by thermodynamics numbers and equations. I would instead strongly recommend "The Organic Chemistry of Explosives" by Agrawal for chemists. Link:: Organic Chemistry of Explosives

I am so going to miss Nick and Mad. I wish this was not the end I know there will be cross overs but it's not the same. Great read

As always a fun read . Never figured out the killer till the very end . Glad Nick and Maddie have their HEA

I enjoy the light theme of the Maddie Graves mysteries, plus the colorful, humorous characters.

This was definitely my favorite in this series. Maude is always a fun character to read. Marla is finally going to get what she deserves. A life with no man but maybe someone to love in a different way will make her grow up. Who knows. Not having Cassidy eventually ending up as their children’s teacher and spreading her spite, everything about the supporting characters was perfect. Then there Nick and Maddie, they’re my favorite book couple and I’m honestly glad Maddie isnt being the jerk she was in grave paths and grave danger. I adore them and was a little worried the fun couple I loved would turn into another Jack and Ivy. They had a great blend of sweet and sarcastic in this one though so I continue to love them.

I have absolutely love this whole series but this book especially being the last was lacking.it just had cameos of main characters such as Maddie grandmother and father that really seemed book like they were kind of forced like I'm going to throw this in here just because I know it's the last book and I have to have them in. Also to sit here and be so excited about the whole wedding and then not to even be a part of the wedding really sucked.I don't know it didn't flow as well as the other stories and like I said for the last one it should have just had something more. I'm really going to miss these characters.

As the series finally, I expected that there would be less focus on the mystery and more on the wedding. I should have known better than that! Amanda M Lee does it once again, delivering a clever mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. Maddie and Nick get their wedding, of course, but not before they solve the mystery of how a cheating husband was shot, who did it, and how he died. Wonderful!

Finally, the day we’ve all been waiting for. For those of you looking for some dramatic ending that doesn’t end with Nick and Maddie together, look somewhere else. I hope this isn’t the end of this series. I look forward to reading about these characters that find laughter and love in any situation. Amazing series! Awesome read! Enjoy!!!

IT LIES FLAT when it's open. All cookbooks should do that, but most don't. Alleluia.Very pretty pictures, clear instructions, nicely laid out. You don't have to flip pages back and forth while making things. Yay that. The pages are kind of smooth, but not slick and shiny; fairly smooth cover. If you dribble something on them and are quick about wiping them off, it should come off okay. Dark stuff might leave a stain on the pages. The book smells like new textbooks. :) It's 10.25" x 7.75", so not too big. So many cookbooks these days take up too much space in a normal-sized kitchen. Not this one. :)Table of Contents lists the sections. Each section lists all the recipes it contains. It's well-indexed.Chiorizo, Corn & Cheddar Quesadillas and Fresh Tomatillo Salsa are the only two things I've made so far, but they were both very good! You can never go wrong with tomatillos, though, lol. Almost all the stuff in her books is good (the Cookies book is probably THE best book on cookies) and I'm fairly confident that the rest of it will be good. But if it's not, I will update. Nobody - not even Martha - gets a pass if what they sell isn't worthy of having money spent on it. Not in my book.Martha has never failed me on quality. Since my salad days, many years ago, when I always bought her stuff at (the discount store) until now, I know that if Martha's name is on it, it's going to be good. In the case of cookbooks, it's going to be EXCELLENT - sometimes the best on the market - and not priced as high as others! I've always appreciated that I could count on Martha for quality, especially when I was pretty broke. She may have become a wealthy woman, but I really don't think that Martha Stewart has really received the credit she is due. You can count on her and that's not something you can say about the majority of names or products (of any kind) these days.

I have been buying Martha Stewart's cookbooks for almost 30 years now. They never let me down and this one is no exception. Great clear recipes and beautiful photos showing each dish. About five years ago I began getting all my cookbooks in the Kindle format. The design for the Kindle version always seemed like an afterthought to the printed book. However this one very wisely puts the photos and recipe introductions to front of the book with links to the recipes in the back. Same approach most digital versions of food magazines use. Very smart move!

Absolutely love this book. Even if some of the recipes are a bit too complicated, it's really easy to find alternatives to some of the ingredients. It's great when you don't have any ideas at all or don't know which direction you want to go in. The pictures are beautiful, as well.

I took a chance that I might find many things in this cookbook to sharpen my skills, to keep me creative, or introduce me to some new ideas for the cocktail hour. I found recipes that differed in basic ingredients from other recipes I have seen before. I found several that I would like to explore and recreate. There are a few sections devoted to different cuisines that were interesting. However, I have a book here of many, many recipes I read, but have either made before or will not be making in the future. I will donate this book and I have ordered the Cook's version. I am just not a Martha fan at. all., and while I was hoping I could put our differences aside and find something fresh, this was not the book to inspire me.

Nice, but dated appetizers. If you are a basic home cook - this one is easy to follow and fairly mistake proof. The moe experienced cook / chef will find most of this boring.Sorry Martha. You are still this Chef's hero :-)

There are a couple that I would not try, but nearly all look delicious! I have already tried some, and are very tasty! The Artichoke Dip is delicious! I always love a cookbook that has plenty of pictures to show what the food SHOULD look like. This one doesn't disappoint. I highly recommend.

This book does not compare to her earlier huge volume on hors d'oeuvres. It is quick and to the point, if you just want to do something, but Martha usually gives us more quality than this.

I've never had a Martha Stewart book that I did not think was fantastic, and this one does not disappoint. I have the original appetizers cookbook as well, and hesitated to purchase this one because I thought that maybe it was the same book, or maybe just an updated version, but it's not. Like all of the Martha Stewart books, it's filled with stunning photographs of fabulous recipes, none of which are difficult to make. I'm going to be using this book a lot.

Christmas present. Feel sure the girls will love this. One of several I bought for a friends' grandchildren for Christmas.

 I own most of Amanda Neel's coloring books and really appreciate her artistic ability. In her previous dog coloring book, “Lovely Dogs”, she portrayed a realistic version of various dog breeds. In “Doodle Dogs, she takes a different approach by creating a realistic outline of the dog and then filling them with beautiful doodles. That allows me to go experiments with colors to create a dog of my own imagining.The designs are quite detailed and have intricate spots to color. Other than using an ultra-fine point marker, I didn't have to use anything special to color the designs.There are two types of designs in the book. One is a head portrait and the other is a full body portrait. The head portraits have elaborate doodle style frames around them. The full body designs have backgrounds included and a simple line frame around the outside of the design. There are a variety of breeds included but, unfortunately, no listing of which are in the book.This is what I found when I colored in this book and tested the paper with my various coloring medium:30 Doodle Dog designs of various breedsDesigns are printed on one side of the page.Paper is typical of CreateSpace, thin, white, slightly rough and non-perforated.Glue BindingDesigns stop before the binding area with plenty of room to cut out pages if you choose to do so.Designs have frames or framing lines around the outer edges of the designBook opens fairly flat for coloringAlcohol and water-based markers bleed through the paper though water-based are mostly spotting.Gel pens and India ink pens leave colorful shadows. India ink can bleed through if you use multiple coats of medium.Colored pencils work well with the paper though hard leads leave dents at the back of the page. Oil an wax-based pencils can provide good color (especially with multiple layers.) I was able to blend and layer well with all types of pencils.I suggest using a blotter page under your working page to keep both dents and ink from marring the pages below.

There are long hair: shed everywhere…..short hair: still shed…..and my favorite: the no shed poodle.What’s Included: Eleven (11) head illustrations with flowers or abstract design borders to color with no background and nineteen (19) full body illustrations with color-in backgrounds and thin line borders. Both head and full body have oodles of tiny doodles to color.Illustrations include both standing and sitting canines. Most are front-facing; however, a few are side views. Some of the illustrations are vertical on the page but quite a few are horizontal.Breeds included: Cocker Spaniel, Doberman, Boxer, Beagle, Poodle, Chihuahua, Terriers, Dachshund, Schnauzer, German Shepherd, Greyhound, Great Dane and many more. All are recognizable dog breeds and are delightfully drawn.A few of the doodles are flyspeck in size and a sharp pointed coloring tool is essential. There are; however, areas where brush pens and large core colored pencils do have turn-around space. Fun!KUDOS:1. The illustrations are so much fun to color, but an impatient beginner might become frustrated because the designs are intricate.2. One illustration per page on 8.5×11 inch white paper.3. Glue Binding that is easy to flatten and stay put without having to constantly fight the pages to keep the book open.4. Well-defined borders. No worries about leaving uneven strokes to give a confusing finale.5. The doodle dogs are centered in the borders. All borders have at least 3/8 inches between border and spine, making it easy to remove the page without damaging the picture if one wishes to do so.6. There is one blank page at the front of the book and two blank pages at back of book to use for doodling, note taking or whatever.7. The cover picture is included. This is always a plus for me!8. Address for download of printable PDF files is included at back of book.DISLIKES:1. Non-perforated pages2. Paper is thin and slightly grainy. Some colored lead leaves a porous look. Wet media leave bleed-through or shadows. Do not forget a blotter page!I used seven (7) brands of colored pencils….both hard core and soft core. I also played around with glitter gel pens, and I discovered while these pens look great in my coloring book, they do not photograph worth a flip!

I'd forgotten how much fun coloring can be! As an avid card maker, I have plenty of alcohol markers and they work well with the type and thickness of the pages. If you're going to use alcohol markers like Copic - what I use, make sure you place a piece of cardstock behind it or remove it from the book before coloring as the marker could bleed through from the back. After I completed my first, I wanted to do the same one over again using a different color scheme. So, now I just print a few copies and can color multiples of the same image. Your results may differ, depending on what type of paper or cardstock you use to copy.There are many different breeds and perfect poses.

I love adult coloring books, and if you like dogs, this one is very fun. Great artistry. The only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is that the designs get TOO detailed. There are so many little places to color, it's easy to run out of colors! I would often rather blend colors in an area that's just a little bit larger than fill in so many tiny little bits. But the artwork is great. Have fun with it!

I was incredibly disappointed with this book. The cover is not a good example of the illustrations inside. The designs are far too busy to do anything creative with them. The doodle dogs by themselves would’ve been great illustrations, however, they added a very busy design in the background which makes the picture very difficult visually to color. If I hadn’t colored one of the pictures I would have returned the book.

In some sense this book is more about the importance of the free press than "bad science". Chapter 10 did not appear in the original version of the book because Goldacre was being sued for libel at the time; while its publication is vindication, one can imagine that others without Goldacre's tenacity and backing would have given up. While media's misrepresentation bears the brunt of Goldacre's wrath throughout the book, that the book ended up on many "best of the year" lists indicates that there are two sides to this story, and there is good and bad media just like good and bad science (but you knew that). Goldacre's book is really aimed at journalists - if those covering science and health issues would read this and take it to heart, we might all be better off. (On the other hand, I think that it's likely that those enlightened journalists would just be replaced, as their publishers are mainly interested in making sales. Goldacre points out that the status quo is not to have true science journalists cover "big" science/health stories, because they tend to drain the sensational and erroneous b.s. out of them.)Aside from all that, for the rest of us it's still a very worthwhile read, because we can never hear too many times that we should use the scientific method and embrace evidence-based medicine, and we rarely hear it in a voice as entertaining as Goldacre's. Like some of the less-favorable reviews point out, the book is a bit repetitive and shrill at times (Goldacre seems to have a particular ax to grind with yuppies with humanities backgrounds), and very Brit-centric, so some might say five stars is a stretch. If the subject matter were less important I'd probably agree, but taken as a whole package the combination of importance and readability makes it a standout. Strongly recommended.

Overall a very good and amusing book. I think the author does get a little passionate about some topics and rambles a bit, but it's an ok tradeoff.I do wish the author gave more defining criteria for some of the items he discusses, especially about homeopathy. I would like to know more about what kind of products he has referring to in some of his discussions.Quality: see the photo, but the printer messed up on some of the pages and makes it hard to read! I thought I was having a stroke!

I just finished reading Bad Science by Ben Goldacre, and it's the most important book I've read in a long time. It's not a thriller, it's a nonfiction work of popular science. But that description doesn't do this book justice. Bad Science has the power to change the world (for the better), if people would read it carefully and with an open mind. It rails against the anti-science winds sweeping our culture, and more importantly, empowers ordinary people of reasonable intelligence to think like scientists and protect themselves from so much unscientific claptrap dressed up as science that is for sale, is on the Internet, and even in respectable media such as newspapers.In fact, I believe Bad Science should be a mandatory part of all high school science curricula, or at the very least, required reading for all medical students (who in my experience are as vulnerable to pseudoscience as other people). Heck, whoever you are, if you haven't read this book, you need to.Ben Goldacre is a brainy muckraker who, with acerbic wit and unassailable accuracy, attacks anti-scientific BS and clearly explains how it cloaks itself in a scientific aura, and how it's wrong. The beautiful thing is, you don't have to be a scientist or even a particularly scientifically literate person to understand. Anybody with a brain can detect BS if given the proper tools.Goldacre's targets cover the spectrum from "quacks, hacks" to "big pharma flacks". He lays bare the alternative realities in which live detox treatments, ear candling, anti-aging cosmetics, homeopathy, diet experts, antioxidants, pharmaceutical companies with large advertising budgets, vaccine opponents, and most frightening of all, people who oppose antiretroviral therapy for AIDS and argue that HIV does not cause this disease.In my opinion, the author is utterly fair in his arguments. But he is not always nice. (Is there a reason why he should be?) Ben Goldacre is my new hero, slaying dragons of ignorance and going head-to-head in intellectual combat with some of the most hysterically irrational elements in society today.Along the way as you read this entertaining book, you'll learn what you need to know about clinical trials, about the power and limitations of statistics, and about how to think critically, to become a little Ben Goldacre yourself.My favorite quote from the book is one of the best science quotes of all time:The plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

We have used the Borch laminated maps on several international trips and love them. They are durable, have very good detail, and are great for the preplanning we do. They can be taken out in the rain with out fear of disintegration. They don't break at the folds like other maps. Routes can be drawn directly on the map, notes can be written on the surface, then as you gain information the trip details can be wiped clean, or revised with a wet cloth. I have used ballpoint, grease pencils, and even Sharpies (I like the sharpie the best.) All can be cleaned off or modified as needed. We are currently in the planning stage of a trip to Chile and Argentina, and can not speak to the accuracy of these particular maps, but if past history is any indication of quality these too will be great.

Great, durable map that holds up well while traveling for weeks on end in a backpack. The lamination capability is really helpful to plan out routes with a dry-erase marker. The routes last til you rub them off. This was a great resource on our trip!

This map worked well for my trip to Chile. I would say it needs to be more detailed, but Chile is a very difficult country to be on map, so I would not hold it against them.

Great book, but my copy is almost unreadable. Anywhere in the book where the letters "iv" are together, i.e. live, given, etc. the word is broken up with "Chapter IV" in the middle. As in gChapter IVen. Or how about prChapter IVately. Very disappointed that this would be put out. Add paragraph breaks mid-sentence and you now have a literary nightmare.Just noticed this date on the last page. This the date I ordered it. No publisher. Almost seems bootleg-ish....I want my money back.

My review is not of the book Animal Farm but of this edition. In case you are looking for a review of the book itself, I highly recommend it. It is a wonderful book and strangely relevant today.I bought this paperback edition from Amazon a few days ago. When it arrived, it looked like someone had printed it on a desktop printer and stapled it together. That on its own wouldn't be a major issue.The deal killer and the reason for the one star review is that someone appears to have run a find and replace on the letter pair "IV" replacing it with the words "Chapter IV". So, for instance, the word "perspective" reads "perspectChapter IVe" and the word "receive" reads "receChapter IVe". The entire book has been affected by this. Glancing through the book, I realized how often the letter pair IV appears in English. Nearly every page in the book has at least one word affected by this.When I first received a copy, I assumed it was that specific copy and ordered another one with a different cover. I didn't check the manufacturer. Turns out it is the same book with a different cover and the issue was in it again.If you are looking to buy an edition of the book, buy some other manufacturer's copy unless you'd like to decipher words with random "Chapter IV" in the middle just for fun.

I am reviewing Amazon's "paperback" edition - not the novel itself (which is wonderful.) This edition was literally printed to fill my order - the date printed on the final page is 3 days before I received it in the mail. The type is tiny, there are weird blank lines throughout, and the words "Chapter IV" just appear randomly many, many times. It's unreadable. What on earth is Amazon playing at by selling this garbage product?I now know that reviews of a "book" on Amazon are not necessarily reviews of the product you are buying. I assumed this edition would be fine since it had over 4 stars. But I now see the average stars include all kinds of editions including Kindle.

The book itself is great - no issues with the book. This kindle version, however, is a travesty. There is not a single paragraph without a glaring typo. It's as if they just scanned the pages of a print version, let the OCR run wild, and did zero proofreading afterwards. Examples include "expect" instead of "except," "to" instead of "too," missing words, punctuation in the wrong place, etc.It's so distracting, that I had stop reading at the beginning of chapter 7, and get a different version. Do yourself a favor and skip this version.

In the 21st century, when we believe that everything is evolving around us and that all countries are moving forward, we realize that there is still a parasite which it is difficult to get rid of.Countries that had the opportunity to evolve, have had to pass a difficult test of not falling into totalitarianism and ambition. Such was the case of some countries of the Soviet Union that achieved liberation, but still others continue to fall into the same abyss from which they can't rise, or don't want to, since that parasite has crawled in the mind of their crowd, as did happen in North Korea, China, etc.Animal Farm shows the perfect example of how the unhealthy idea of ​​a cheap Socialism began to take root to become a dictatorial Communism, as it happens in Venezuela today. Its strange end leaves a bitter taste that perhaps the writer did on purpose to open the consciousness of future generations. An open ending that forces the reader to ask himself: what is the solution? And how will it end?Through human experiences of the animals of this farm, we can identify this truth that still lingers in some shady societies of the present. The solution is in our hands. It will depend on the degree of preparation, culture, moral values, determination, and courage people have to free their homeland and achieve a better future. Remember governments must fear the people and not the opposite.After that, I summarize my point of view about the strongest references dealt with through the characters in this book (that can be easily identify and distinguished when you start to read the story) in the following sections:1) Leaders full of charisma who manage to enter the hearts of the crowd by their power of conviction. They choose the most insecure sectors and people to whom they inject large doses of false trust and dependence, and then use them in the propagation of their miserable revolution.2) From the beginning, they call a supposed self-identification and self-recognition through rhythmic and flattering slogans. They remember again and again their few and poor achievements that remain in the distant past. Then, they impose a barrier of differences between them and the supposed enemy. In this way, the people is infused with a nationalism that is based on ignorance, fear, and blind reverence, forcing them to repeat proverbs and apply reforms without understanding the true meaning or purpose, thus beginning to resemble a herd of sheep, marching pleased towards the slaughterhouse.3) They make the crowd believe that they have the final decision and, for the common good, unconsciously follow the rules and imposed parameters. In addition, some extra benefits are allowed to those who follow and protect the regime indulgently. This is how they teach the majority that it is better to be corrupt, dishonest, and negligent, in order to achieve higher ranks.4) The regime feel entitled to legalize and abolish what suits it, ordering the people what to eat, how to dress, greet and live, and what to learn, while they live freely at the expense of the efforts of others and of the injustices committed, trampling the honor of an entire country and their own Machiavellian socialist laws.5) What seemed a worthy plan for community, social, intellectual, and economic development, now shows the true intention that tries to kill the spirit of solidarity to impose the dictatorial and even genocidal plan, if the regressive revolution warrants it.6) Everyone, even the majority of the crowd, realize that revolutionary projects are a total failure when they find themselves amidst of aberrant poverty.7) When they want to discredit an opponent or other progressive ideas, they use their famous method of defamation with lies, intimidation, and any other means. For them, the aim (maintain / save the revolution) justifies the means (spreading false rumors, prosecutions, torture, hunger, espionage), importing in the least the opinion of others, since their own people live in ignorance, cowardice and/or conformism.8) To finally protect their interests and ideals, communists surround themselves with and associate with allies of their own class: corrupt, traffickers, murderers and terrorists, and expand their power further through the destruction of every vital block of a society , from its financial structure to public sectors, such as health, without caring about the misery that people live. To rule the ignorant and negligent is much easier.9) There comes a time when the revolutionary-communist doctrine is so deeply rooted in the consciences, that the people forget how well they lived before. The most outrageous thing is that there are still people who support such regimes and whose can mental programming is so easily influenced on behalf the sadistic needs and convenience of these cunning and malevolent rulers.Times before the Rebellion are being left in the past, where the memories struggle to keep them safe to share them with others
