I'm not sure how I can so strongly dislike a book that contains so many of the things I love: books, a bookstore, a book seller, France, and food. And it is a loving ode to books. This started out promising and was sprinkled with some good moments, but I forced myself to finish it. Every few chapters I wanted to stop. I must admit that I have been in a reading slump. I have not liked the last four books that I have read.Jean Pardue (John Lost--get it?) is a book seller with a broken heart. The love of his life, Manon, walked out on him over twenty years ago. She left a letter, which he put in a drawer unread. Then he sealed up her favorite room in his apartment and went on with his unhappy life. He owns a bookstore that is located on a moored barge. He has a special intuition for matching the perfect book to a person. He uses books to heal other people's emotions, but not his own. In helping a new neighbor, Jean ends up reading Manon's letter. He is gutted and decides to pull anchor and pilot his barge to her hometown. Like one of those road trip comedy movies, Jean picks up various emotionally wounded passengers along the way. I did not care for this plot line and sadly it takes up most of the book. I don't think it is a spoiler to say that Jean (and everyone he encounters on his journey) find whatever emotional peace they are looking for. The book is also interspersed with Manon's travel diary, which gives some insight into her and her choices.People describe the writing in this book as beautiful and poetic. I found it to be too flowery and emotionally overwrought. There is a heavy dose of romance in this book, which is not my favorite genre. The story is also long--almost 400 pages--and was in want of some good editing. I also found the ending too neat, tidy, and happy to be believable. I don't want to be too specific, as that would be a spoiler, but Jean's blossoming relationship with Manon's family is just ridiculous. Who are these sainted people? There was an excerpt of the author's new book at the end. I did not read it. Maybe I am just a jaded and cranky old bat, but I did not enjoy this book.

This was a lovely read. I couldn't put it down, and I can't say enough good about it. We read it for book club and everyone enjoyed the book.Although it's not the book for everyone, ten ladies in Houston embraced a trip with Jean Perdu on a bookstore barge for a spirited and spirit-filled journey on the Seine River in France. It was filled with romance, regret, love lost and love gained, excitement, the thrill of passion, beauty, history etc., all the ingredients needed for an intriguing tale. The characters have depth, they're lovable and they hold a place in/for the story. There's mystery throughout and it all ties up in a neat package at the happy, yet teary, ending. The book gives plenty of food for thought about what we really want/need in life and what's really important. The book is trimmed in that there were no loose ends or unnecessary characters. Like a puzzle, everything and everyone was in the story for a good reason. The book left me feeling good about life in general and how much I appreciate and love the friends, family and people around me. "The Little Paris Bookshop" was translated into 27 different languages, and I can certainly see why.Cynthia Cooks/Author

Why do people like this book so much? It's dreadful. It's really chick-lit soft porn fantasy, but not done well. The story line is so unrealistic that I couldn't lose myself in the novel, and the characters are one dimensional and never came alive for me. They're also not remotely interesting or likeable. I plodded through the whole book because I kept thinking it had to get better because of all the great reviews, but nope. Really really awful.

This book sounded so cute and I really wanted to like it: a book about a literary nerd living in France is as good as it gets for me. However it felt really forced for me. I felt myself constantly thinking about the authors decisions and incapable of actually getting lost in the story. I am a fan of injecting feminist ideas into media, but some of the scenarios of female empowerment and allowing men to have emotion felt completely forced and unnatural to the progression of the story. I keep trying to pick it up and force myself to read the rest for that one point where it gets good but it just doesn't. Also, the stupidity of the characters is mind numbing. Most novels have self unaware characters to some degree and you can see their flaws before they can, that's part of the fun when they discover and work on their flaws. But to have obsessed over a woman for 20 years, kept a room that reminded him of her sealed up during all that time, never even asking her why she disappeared, still unable to cope at the thought of her as a grown ass man in his 50s left me scratching my head. That is a level of unrealistic I just can't really get on board with. He's so stupid about it and about the obvious love interest he's "meant to be" with that it's just annoying, as opposed to charming. Really cute idea but poorly executed.

Anyone seeking a witty read that will most likely guarantee that you’ll dine out for free in the months to come need look no further than this Strongbox of gems. All the goodies are here. Neatly packaged in pithy, easy-to-recall (and possibly embellish) tidbits, Texans will be dyin’ to share proof of how they saved the buffalo in Yellowstone, holstered the Colt six-shooter to take on the Comanches “rapid fire weapons,” and why Whataburg-er is every Texans first stop after an out-of-state trip. Chock full of Tex-Centric snippets also makes entertaining reading for those who don’t (yet) identify as a Texan. Who doesn’t enjoy Lonesome Dove, and welcomes more factoids? While waiting for your tires to be rotated you can brush up on how to speak Texan for your next oil and gas business meeting, and learn why your daughter’s newest boyfriend is named Austin and drives a pickup truck, “the luxury car of Texas.” Next time you drive across Texas, or more likely look out the window of a Southwest airline flight, I promise you will contemplate Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca and his walk, barefoot and mostly naked, across Texas. Or a dish of Blue Bell ice cream.

Over the years in my travels both near and far, repeatedly I have faced answering one of two questions: First, what is Texas really like? Second, why should I even consider visiting your state? Now, finally I have an immediate, clear, definitive and compelling answer: You must immediately get a copy and read W. F. Strong's STORIES FROM TEXAS-SOME OF THEM ARE TRUE. Then you will know!As a life-long Texan I thought I knew Texas. I was wrong. Professor Strong provides colorful, witty and compelling tales of my state's unique language (happily, not always the King's English), eccentric historical figures (not always on the right side of the law), its brew of many cultures (a challenge but fun to decipher) and the state's gorgeous multi-faceted landscapes (a thrill to travel and behold). This book confirms why Texans are uniquely and aggressively proud of their state and will persuade others they should get here as quickly as they can. They might decide to stay.

I am not a fan of non-fiction, however, I am thoroughly enjoying Stories from Texas. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Texas. I have learned things I didn't know and reminded of things I have forgotten over the years. I also think this will be re-read many times. I especially enjoyed Judge Roy Bean and Tom Landry. I met Tom when he moved to The Hills. He was everything you said he was and more. Eddie Childs and George Bush made their marks in Midland. I was a childhood friend of Jerry Childs when they lived in Midland. Great read! This is what sets Texas apart and places us on the world stage.

I bought more than one because I feel it would be an excellent gift for any born Texan and/or anyone who "got here as soon as they could". If you know and love Texas you will relate to most everything in it. It's a fun book to read because you find yourself shaking your head thinking you were the only one who noticed that. This would be entertaining to even a non Texan and would fit nicely on a guest room night reading table, the perfect size for that and your visiting house guests would surely get a kick out of it. I enjoyed it and who better to write it than WF Strong who is a master story teller who's been listening to stories about Texas on NPR for years. Includes a variety of Texas treasures and history like Blue Bell Ice Cream, Dr. Pepper, Whataburger, Troubadours, Lonesome Dove quotes, how Texas has changed and even that well known feeling of being homesick for Texas. This is an enjoyable, relatable book.

Excellent little 140 page book. As person who was not born here but has lived in central Texas for the last 12 years I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of Texas stories written by an author who was raised and went to the same high school as my wife, just about 8-10 years later. Some of the stories are semi-serious, others are heartwarming, but most just fun antidotes, with some really funny ones evoking good belly laughs.I highly recommend this book for light, entertaining reading about the strange and unique state of Texas and its fine (mostly) people.

Living in the 21st century we often forget about how life was, but book is a great source of nostalgia. The stories make me laugh and feel proud of my home. The pictures are a nice touch. If you're living out of the state and missing home, I feel like this slice of Texas will fill your homesickness like a slice of pecans pie with a scoop of Blue Bell.

I buy Texas books for my wife so I can get my new purchases into the house more easily. She believes everyone wants to live in the great state of Texas and particularly enjoys anything to do with the history of Texas with an emphasis on the Rangers. Must confess I have also developed an appreciation for these books which have grown to overflow one of our book cases. She loved the Stories from Texas. Why? "Anyone from Texas will remember everything in this book which will start a flood of pleasant memories and the author uses a voice found only in Texas." It goes up there right next to the Dobie collection.

I love listening to W. F. Strong’s essays on Texas Standard, so I was so excited when I found he had written this book! It has some of my favorite essays that I have heard and enjoyed on the radio, and also some new ones. It is just a joyful book for everyone who loves Texas and Texans who talk like me. (You’ll understand this after you read the chapter on the Texas dialect and Tex-centric tendencies!) These short essays will help you remember what’s right about our state and put a hitch in your giddy up in the process!

In this book Lisa Sugar really makes herself sound great! But it's full of contradictions and completely self-aggrandizing. For example, she has to be torn away from her computer to give birth and her family is a priority, but she also manages to put in over 40 hours, get to Soul Cycle, with a nanny...a lot of generic advice (like don't burn bridges at work, write thank yous) that would make this a good book for a young woman going into college or just graduating from college. The writing is nothing impressive either and that's apparently what built her "empire". Personally, I think she had the right idea early on and the timing was perfect to write, review, and expand on celebrity lives. However, I do want to get her Popsugar "must-have Box". Heard it 's pretty great.

This book is really great! It contains some great, actionable advice for people just getting started in their careers that is easy to understand and follow while at the same time telling the story of the creation of POPSUGAR, an amazing brand we all know and love!

I guess I wanted to know more about the business than anything else! But a good read nonetheless! You go, Lisa!

Power Your Happy by Lisa Sugar was a very clear and informative book. I enjoyed listening to the story of PopSuger via Audio Recording and I learned a few new and interesting points to try in my own life. I really enjoyed the thoughtful questions to consider that were sprinkled throughout the book by Ms. Sugar and I sincerely agreed with her sentiment that everything possible should be automated to save on time and energy.I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is young and learning how to navigate a new and independent career. The book contains great pointers on the Resume preparation and the interview processes. Although, generally, this book was gender neutral, it seemed to me that it would be more friendly towards women than men as Ms. Sugar speaks of the female experience and the roles that women play within the family unit and within a company culture. This was a great book and definitely worth reading.Happy Reading!

This is good, light reading (or listening). I enjoy Pop Sugar and it was great to hear how it all started. And what a drive Lisa has! I found the book to be more about her life story than a motivational business guide. Her suggestions and tips are very basic, weak in some cases, or geared solely to a young person that is just entering the work world.

Power Your Happy is a fun, easy to read book filled with ideas that are perfect for someone starting their career and wanting inspiration to find direction, work hard and improve their communication and networking skills.Lisa has achieved great success by following her love of writing and expanding into a fun monthly subscription box (my favorite) - this book was a gift in the Popsugar box and a pleasure to read. Her personality comes through her writing, her advice is applicable to everyone and her love of her family and lifestyle is really evident.

I received a review copyFifteen percent in, and I was taking notes. I encouraged my husband to read this book. I will read this again. And probably again. Lisa Sugar has a terrific voice, very positive and encouraging, and I soaked up her advice throughout. I saw a lot of myself Lisa, from having big dreams to working on my passion in every moment of spare time I had, and I feel like I made a new friend after reading this. I’m so thankful I got the opportunity to read Power Your Happy, and I highly, highly recommend this. I also now really want to work at POPSUGAR. Like, real bad. In all seriousness though, I cannot say enough good about this book. A must read.

This is not a ball-buster career blueprint, which it is a relief, as I have read plenty of them. It is a friendly, resourceful lifestyle manual for those that may be wondering “is this all there is” and ready, or forced, to make a career change. Can it be done? Is it worth the risk? Lisa shows that it is possible and your happiness is definitely worth the effort. I keep referring to it as a lifestyle guide because Lisa makes a point of never really distinguishing between career, home and family. She gives us a modern take on ‘having it all’, encouraging instead ‘merging it all’, fully acknowledging that ‘all’ is a lot to handle sometimes.
