I am a Firefighter/Paramedic who teaches on Firefighter Behavioral Health and Suicide Awareness. I also deal with man tragedies of my own through work and just day to day life. This book is an amazing book teaching on ways to help yourself so you can continue to help others. It also gives many amazing testimonials that touch deeply to the soul. This book is great for Police, Fire, EMS, and I would think Doctors and Nurses as well. I bought this book used and it came in great condition. One last thing, remember that you are STRONGEST when you can recognize the need for help!

This book is a must read for any first responder in my opinion. I attended a presentation by the author and both it and the book are very informative. I didn't understand why I was having some of the feelings I was having or what to do about them and how to help myself. After reading this book I have a better understanding. It really explains how the stress affects our bodies and gives ways to help.

Borrowing heavily from the themes in Gilmartin's "Emotional Survival," Bulletproof Spirit is well written and laid out, particularly in the important areas of warning signs of emotional distress, the signs and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the efficacy of peer support programs. The limitations of peer support programs, particularly when it comes to "confidentiality," are explained well. The text is punctuated with excellent stories of critical incident trauma survivors, although the book unfortunately makes only brief reference to "cumulative" trauma among first responders. The dangers and types of maladaptive coping techniques are clearly laid out. Considerable emphasis is placed on an interesting program called "Beyond Survival Toward Officer Wellness" (or BeSTOW), an FBI program endorsed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and which serves as an example of planning for a departmental wellness program, including peer support, an employee assistance program, a chaplaincy program and physical fitness standards. The book endorses the "Mitchell Model" of critical incident stress debriefing, a topic that is now under considerable debate--some maintain that more harm than good is done to the potentially traumatized victim.Of particular interest in Bulletproof Spirit, however, is its encouragement of annual "mental health checkups," by which an officer seeks out and visits a therapist once a year to review the past year, see what has worked and what hasn't, and plan for the next year. This is, perhaps, the most significant part of the book and is crucial to first responders in these critical times. Waiting until one actually "needs help" is simply too late. Some may find the book's passages on spirituality, faith, God and prayer to be somewhat uncomfortable, but the author attempts to couch these teachings in a "universal" manner. Similarly, the book focuses on the role of chaplains in the emergency services, noting their required credentials and training while emphasizing their benefits to first responders in terms of confidentiality. All in all, Bulletproof Spirit is a "good read" for those working (or retired) as first responders.

Captain Dan Willis has written a solid career survival manual for all First Responders by providing a long over-due guide in placing strategic "resilience kevlar" over the real human emotions which all too often morph into accumulative compassion fatigue. Exceptionally readable, thought provoking and spot-on. Should be required reading for all First Responders, Field Training Officers and the bosses.

I bought your book for my paramedic son who was very appreciative and stated he has used some of the techniques in the book to relax his mind and body. First responders always have to suppress their feelings and stoically carry on. I call it "urban Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome". Thank you so much for your help and caring. He has recommended your work to his comrades.

Working in emergency service field. We go through a lot from making sudden decision and not been able to help everyone can be stressful. I bought this book and it really helped me cope with the stress of the job

Highly recommend this book for first responders and anyone who spends time with them.

Awesome book!!

Street Without a Name: Childhood and Other Misadventures in Bulgaria, by Kapka Kassabova

From Publishers Weekly

Novelist, poet and travel writer Kassabova takes a meandering, bittersweet journey through her native Bulgaria, where she grew up in the last decade and a half of the Cold War. Her chilling, panoramic view of life under Communism is perhaps best caught in her memory of the "rumored disaster at Chernobyl," vehemently denied by the Bulgarian government; just as nuclear rain began t fall, the citizens were forced into the streets for a mandatory May Day celebration that left many to fall sick and die within the year. Kassabova's personal history, like her country's, is full of complex characters and overwhelming challenges; one of her grandfathers, she realized later, was a homosexual struggling in a country that forbade it, and Kassabova herself developed teenage anorexia: "If you can't do anything to the world around you, you do it to yourself." Written following her return visit as a 34-year-old "global soul," Kassabova finds the country she left at 17 still devastated, but with a new measure of hope. Kassabova's tendency to travel two or three decades in a single paragraph can make her a challenge to follow, and she too often gets lost in day-to-day minutia; though engaging and illuminating as is, a more rigorous edit could have made this memoir a page turner. “A well-wrought memoir about growing up in Bulgaria during the dreary Communist years.... As both an insider and outsider, the author is able to assess her complex country with a simultaneously fond and critical gaze. Delves deeply into memory, history and imagination. (Kirkus Reviews)”

Kapka Kassabova has written a superb book that I highly recommend to anyone interested in good writing, Bulgaria, Eastern Europe, life under Communism, the rich history and mystifying mythology of that area of the world. It has an intimate quality about it that makes her personal reflections about her life, family and country poignant, totally captivating and universally appealing. Don't be fooled by the sad quality of the opening chapters on her childhood. The narrative builds as her tour of her country progress through her journey to all the places in her memory and through the geography and history of one of the oldest and most complex places in Europe. She returned from a 14 year exile and world travel to find her roots, or what is left of them, in her place of birth. Full of memorable stories, her story of meeting a woman survivor of the communist era concentration camps during one of her many train rides was most remarkable. The woman characterizes the camp as being like the ones that the Nazi's had. Then she qualifies that by saying that the Holocaust was really over-stated and that it never really happened. Why do you care about Jews, she asks Kapka. Are you a Jew? The ironies and complexities of our past rise to the top throughout this fine volume. I don't know if Kassabova found the peace in her soul that she was searching for, but she certainly provides a soulful experience for anyone who reads this book.

This is the author's personal reflection of her life in Bulgaria under the last 2 decades of socialism and a trip to revisit places of personal importance for her 20 years later. While the account of life under socialism is very accurate, it has a darker hue, which may not be shared by other people who lived in those times there. Yet, it is a personal reflection, of a child growing up in the ugly panel block suburbs, in a young family who struggled to create a normal life and home, while managing two careers and two young daughters. Despite the darker hue of the pictures I find the account lovable with its honesty and sense of humour. The account of the journey 20 years later is also delightful and honest. A highly recommended book for anyone interested in Bulgaria.

This is a beautifully written nostalgic tour through the author and Bulgaria's history. Humorously sharing stories from her Cold War childhood, Kassabova recounts her past and current travels throughout the country. Never mocking, but always with an honest eye, she shares the varied histories of the towns and the people she encounters along the way.

A really interesting perspective on Bulgaria. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as an introduction to the complxity of the country and it's people. I started reading this book on the plane into Sofia, and many of Kapka's observations ring true. (including my baggage being lost!!) a very readable insight into Bulgaria.

5 stars though the translation was a little awkward. Beautiful funny political heartbraking and heartwarming all in one. Thank you Kapka.

This is an eastern european travelogue from the point of view of an ambivalent expatriate returning home, which gives an added dimension compared to travelogues of interested foreigners like, say, Rebecca West. (There's a point when the narratives of this book and "Black Lamb and Grey Falcon" almost touch, in the chapter dealing with Macedonia.)The first and more autobiographical half of the book was often quite poignant, as were the later parts in which the author visits her ailing, lonely relatives and the places of her youth.

This book of coming of age after the fall of communism in Bulgaria was fascinating. I enjoyed it tremendously, although once I moved to Bulgaria I found that many Bulgarian criticized it for the author's accuracy. That said, memoir is told from one's individual experience, as they interpret it. Overall, I think this is a fine book, by a fine writer.

Having just visited Bulgaria, I found this memoir very interesting. The author describes growing up in authoritarian communist Bulgaria and the country seen through the same eyes on her return as a much travelled young woman. Well written and it helps one understand so much more than the guide books tell.

Amazon.com Review

The key difference between Microsoft Windows and UNIX is that Windows is meant to be easy to learn, while UNIX is meant to compensate for a steep learning curve by providing extraordinary flexibility to knowledgeable users. Linux: Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition is the best book on the market in terms of flattening that learning curve. The author, Paul Sheer, uses this book as the text for a class he teaches, and its instructional value is unquestionable. Rather than attempt to make analogies for the way things are done in Windows or in Mac OS, or try to satisfy readers' requirements with mere recipes, Sheer tries to inculcate his readers into the Linux way of thinking. The idea is that work gets done differently in Linux, and you have to get a few concepts clear in order to work effectively in the environment.Take, for example, Sheer's discussion of the /etc/passwd file, which is at the core of user authentication. He provides a listing of a typical /etc/passwd file, then explains what each element on each line is for. This leads smoothly into a discussion of /etc/shadow, the shadow password file, and its capacity for hiding passwords behind a one-way hash algorithm. Sheer's prose is unfailingly clear and detailed, which is good because he's chosen to omit graphics altogether (which means, incidentally, that this book focuses on the command shell--bash, to be precise--and even the chapter on X Windows lacks screen shots). Aside from a few weird typographical choices (a tiny picture of a penguin invariably follows the word "Linux" in body text, for example), this is a faultless book.--David Wall Topics covered: How to be a competent Linux user, familiar with the command line, key utilities like "sed," and important related skills like C programming, shell scripting, and regular expression creation. There's coverage of server software--notably HTTPd, Sendmail, and Exim--and coverage of the PostgreSQL server.

Super relevant, if this was 1996. The book is all over the place, and is written in the style of that horrible 1990s IT guy who is more interested in talking down to you than actually providing helpful information. Painful to read in any decade.

good

This entire book can be found online:[...]Despite that I have a copy so that I can read it without a device.Based on my exploration of a handful of Linux titles, this book seems better than most because it presents not only some practical ideas/tools/techniques, but also theoretical ones.Check it out on the we and decide for yourself.

Nice. Easy to follow guide.

Theis title was chosen as the textbook for an introductory class on Linux. After several weeks the class concluded it was not a good choice for an introductory text. Although the book contains a wealth of information the book lacks any ordered teaching structure which a student can build on.

I've read (not just scanned) about 15 Linux reference books of varying depth and direction. Rute is the best. If you can have only one or simply can't live knowing you don't have the definitive guide then you must grab a copy of RUTE. Check out the TOC and Preface for an idea of why I'm so enthused. Briefly, let me just say that topics covered (many and well) are each treated with respect (at least a paragraph of text, not just usage summaries that parrot the man pages) and obviously were learned in the field, not from other books. There are other reasons, but I leave them for you to discover. ENJOY.

This is a wonderfully written book, as many reviewers have said. The author has a gift for clear explanation and writes in a lucid style which is far too rare in IT books. But beware! The coverage of topics is quite uneven: be sure that it covers the material that you need. For example, the coverage of mail is a little on how SMTP, POP and IMAP work, and 17 pages covering configuration of exim and a little on sendmail, and combatting spam, It doesn't give enough detail to begin to set up or maintain a mail server. Contrast this with 40 pages on the Linux File System standard.

The only reason I gave this book three stars is that most of this info regards GNU/Linux systems that are running a 2.2 kernel. The book points out in its text that the 2.4 kernel is upcoming. As I write this, the 2.4 kernel has been around for years now, and the 2.6 kernel (non-testing) is on its way. Likewise, some non-kernel material is also *completely outdated* (sound card configuration and NFS spring to mind). This book doesn't even mention kudzu, which is the bread & butter of RedHat, Knoppix, Mandrake, etc. Another way to put this: if kudzu can't autoconfigure your ISA hardware, this book may help. However, the material in this book which is still relevent is worthwhile. If the author releases an updated edition, I'd be very tempted to buy it.
