Two significant books about the same miscarriage of justice are set in the same Oklahoma town (Ada) and concern the same scapegoat (Ron Williamson), who was unfairly sent to jail for a local murder. One of those books was AN INNOCENT MAN by John Grisham; the other this one, by Robert Mayer, was first published in 1987. Ada isn't a very large town (population about 16,000 during the time these unfortunate events take place), and even though it boasts a public four-year college, it does not seem to rank very high in jurisprudence. This book is a little more detailed; John Grisham's, unsurprisingly, shows its sympathy more obviously (and was the celebrated author's first nonfiction book). Either -- or both -- are well worth reading. Personally I intend never to set foot inside Ada, Oklahoma, if I can help it.
Truthfully, you could use the search engine of your choice, find this case, see the outcome and think, "Meh."My hope is that young minds, still open and not yet set on a collision course with the belief that heresay is the all-encompassing truth, will be assigned or encouraged to read this. To learn that, in this age of DNA and other amazing scientific advances, assumptions are still, tragically, made.Be encouraged to become voices for the prosecuted when you see them blatantly being silenced or coerced into lying. To be a defense attorney is easy.We need the youth of today to remember things can go wrong SO quickly, they're needed to become the next generation to fight for justice.And we need to remember to pray for the many families who were wronged. Beginning with Denice's and continuing through those charged in error.This dark side of our justice system MUST be stopped. The truth mustn't be silenced.
I have read this book at least twice since 1990, and have lent it out both times and didn't get it back. It is the best true crime book that I have ever read for several reasons. The story has haunted me ever since, because I am convinced that these 2 men, who remain in prison today, were falsely convicted. I've read hundreds, and likely more, of true crime books over the years, and none has stuck with me like this story. The corruption in Ada, Oklahoma is the worst that I have read about, and it's been going on for decades. John Grisham wrote a book about 2 other men who were falsely accused of another crime in the same town, and this case was mentioned in that book. I had hoped that book would bring some help to this case, but nothing. I am not connected to the town or the case in any way, but it's been on my conscience because it is so wrong. The writer is so good at detailing the corruption on every level, and anyone can see how this happened to 2 young men without legal representation and no money. It's almost 40 years now that they've been locked up. Despicable.
If you wish to be infuriated by how police work in many venues of this country, it will drive you to distraction. These boys were clearly railroaded into making false confessions. Now, a thinking person will wonder if they were much more clever than given credit for and planned to lead the police on a merry hunt for allegedly abducting a female clerk from and fast food market or are they really not guilty. The trial of these boys is a mere sham and one wonders what kind of judges we have sitting on our benches. Nonetheless, 2 young males get a ridiculous jail and death sentence without one solid shred of evidence that the girl is even dead. I loved this book for its many challenges to my overworked brain. With DNA today, I doubt this would have been brought to trial in the first place. Worthwhile reading for all who seek justice in this world.
At times it was difficult for me tho read this story because it goes so deep into describing the small town life of Ada. Everyone it's connected to some degree for various reasons. Which sometimes made the story complicated. That being said, this is an unbelievable, frustrating and actually frightening true story. Innocent people being convicted under the hands of law enforcement officials that bend protocol and operate without ethics or integrity. Power and control is the district attorney's concern, so much so it over shadows the death of the victim.
This is an incredible story how two men were railroaded into a falsely guilty verdict because of bad police work and a lazy district attorney with a huge ego. Very sad how two men's lives can be ruined without any real proof, only on what others say. I certainly hope that Ada, Oklahoma has cleaned up its act! They still don't have the real killer! There wasn't any DNA to save for future testing when it became available. I personally think it may have been the guy in the second book who was ultimately found guilty of that murder. That's just my opinion.
A true story showing the depravity of some people pretending to work for law and order. At times infuriating, always informative, this could be a story about anyone just as easily as it was the two about which this book was written. The sloppy investigation by police and dealings of prosecution was second only to the willingness of a jury to believe a "confession" which was in fact a dream. With absolutely no evidence other than this "confession" and in fact the details were proven to be completely false, two men are still sitting in prison. The jury was asked to accept a confession in which every detail was proven to be a lie but accept the confession of murder anyway. A true story of how broken our system of justice is and why so many have been able to prove their innocence over the past few decades. Had there been any biological evidence, I have no doubt these two men would be added to the growing list of exonerated individuals.
