I read this book decades ago when I was a teenager and it changed my life. Recently I thought about giving it as a gift to a 13-year old girl, so I started skimming over it to see if it was appropriate.It is, but it's also a wonderful story for adults. I was engrossed and ended up reading the whole book all over again.What a refreshing, encouraging story! My favorite thing is that Joni doesn't gloss over the hard things. Not only her quadriplegia, but also her struggles with depression and struggles with God. I found myself writing down quotes from the book so I would remember them, and once again, this has encouraged me spiritually. Thank you, Joni!
For sharing your story and faith. I read this book when I was 11 or 12 back in the late 70's after borrowing it from a family friend at church. I have read parts again over the years, but never again in full. I just read it again at age 50 in one evening. There could not have been better timing. I feel blessed. I have degrees in psychology and rehabilitation counseling and have worked for the same disability service organization for just shy of 27 years. After a long hard week where I have almost walked off the job several times due to frustration with changing regs, poor but over regulated funding streams and the inability to support my ever frustrated and burned out staff, I now have a renewed sense of purpose. Am I a rehab counselor because I read Joni at a young age? I think it was an influence! I heard Joni on the radio this week on a Christian broadcast, Haven Today. I travel to various program sites throughout each day as an administrator and I seemed to "coincidentally" be in the car going somewhere at the right time to hear her speak every day. It reminded me I had this book saved in my Kindle library, waiting to be read. Thank- you Joni for Sharing your story!!
This is a great book. Mrs. Tada tells her story and it is a great encouragement to all. At the same time we cannot but feel ashamed at how we deal with the difficulties of life. Even reading about her own struggles in Christianity, we can see how The Almighty God used, uses, and, certainly, will use her to glorify His amazing name. We also find a lot of Theology in this book, not as in a Systematic Theology book, but as in the daily life practice of the Word. I pray to God that this book, and certainly, others by her, will continue to motivate, strengthen, and point people to Jesus Christ. 'PTL' - Praise the Lord!
What a woman! The adversities she has had to overcome would put a lot of people into depression for the rest of their lives. She took what she still had and used it to turn her disability into a ministry that encourages and provides support for so many others with disabilities and their families both physically and spiritually. Praise God that He can use ANYBODY to achieve His work.
I expected more from this author as she has grown into a beautiful woman inside out through the struggle of being a quadriplegic and from being Christian. However, I am guessing that this book was written in her earlier years before she grew in her faith because there are parts in her book that are very graphic for children to read. Maybe in todays society others would disagree with me but I would not even feel comfortable letting my maturing teens read this book.
This autobiography is one that may literally be a lifesaver for readers.It is the story of Joni Eareckson Tada. Paralyzed from the neck down in a diving accident at age 17, Joni has faced suffering that few could imagine. She has endured unbelievable pain and loss. She has not even been able to do the simplest things for herself such as get a glass of water. Yet, in spite of all of that, she has excelled both spiritually and in the impact that she has had on countless others.The author provides some terrific insights into thankfulness, suffering and God's will. One thing that amazes me is her observation about how 'being in a wheelchair became trivial' after she realized how God's perspective is so completely different from ours and she changed her own. Another is the way that she visualized Jesus telling her that He knows how to run her life much better than she does even if it meant being physically helpless.Another interesting story deals with the thought that perhaps a prayer of hers before the accident led to that lifechanging event.The bottom line is that this is a superb book that should be read by all Christians, those dealing with big disabilities, and virtually everyone else who is interested in a life story made powerful by Jesus Christ.
Amazing true life story of which I was pretty familiar, but to actually read the account from Joni's own words. Loved it! Only goes to show what God will do for us if we only trust in him. Unfortunately, all to often it takes great tragedy for us to turn to Him so fully.
A remarkable book and unforgettable story about a woman who would not allow her diving accident to defeat her but become a platform of witness and testimony for Christ Jesus! I commend the book!!!
