It is somewhat easy to read, but large swaths of the original book have been edited out. If I compare the chapters in this book to the chapters listed in Wikipedia, only chapters 1, 3, 25 and 26 of the original Nihon Shoki appear to be covered. Furthermore, the book is riddled with editing mistakes. For example, the letters "b" and "h" are often interchangeable, and little to no explanation is given for some of the more specific terms.
This is a readable translation. The Nihongi cannot be compared to other "religious" literature. The text completely focuses on the "Emperor" and his successors. Interestingly, toward the end it documents the conversion of a Buddhist emperor to Shinto.If you are looking for Shinto doctrine or ritual (aside from veneration of the Emperor), look elsewhere. However, the lack of these things tells as much about Shinto as if they were present. Shinto was the air breathed and needed no elaboration for the Nihongi's first readers.

a must-read if you're into that era of Japanese history. However, I would only recommend it to those who are familiar with the subject matter, there's a lot a tedious parts and high minded maxims.
