Ok, I started reading Ernest Dempsey novels maybe 2 years ago now. He had a special on three Adriana mysteries and it was a deal I couldn't pass up. In that series, Sean Wyatt was introduced to me. I started reading his books then and am pretty certain I've read them all. I've reviewed all I've read and, as the title states I've run out of superlatives. My one disappointment is that while Adriana appears from time to time in the Sean Wyatt books, she hasn't been featured in a while. I heard from Mr. Dempsey through his very informative emails that I am about to be treated to a new Adriana story.

I have been a fan of Ernest Dempsey and his Sean Wyatt books since the beginning of the series, and I have never been disappointed. This one was extra special because there were two story lines running through the book, which were tied together with a shocker! And the villain? Well, I won't do a spoiler, but I sure didn't see that coming! The descriptions were really well done - I could almost feel that jungle heat and the biting bugs!If you're a fan of Sean Wyatt and Ernest Dempsey, you will love this one. If you aren't a fan, read this book, and I am very sure you will be. Thanks again Ernest for another fabulous read!

The Fourth Prophecy by Ernest Dempsey is a mystery. Two men, Sean and Tommy, are hired by a congresswoman to investigate a lead in an ancient treasure or artifact in Mexico and South America. The two men encounter guerrillas, CIA, drug cartels, and wildlife of the rain forest as they search for the secrets in an old Spanish diary. While they are chasing down Mayan clues, dishonest congressmen and women are killed one by one. Eventually, the two story lines come together. My Review: This is my first Ernest Dempsey novel. He took me to faraway places and added just enough history to keep me interested and entertained while sucking me into a fun mystery. I enjoyed the book from cover to cover and will definitely buy another one from this Sean Wyatt series. I didn't know any of the characters from other books, but that didn't matter as each story stands alone. I couldn't help but think of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys as I read. Dempsey puts an adult and modern splash on genre. Great read for mystery lovers! 5/5 Stars.

I've read every Sean Wyatt book to this point. Love the characters and the story lines but they are getting harder for me to read as the fight sequences get more and more ridiculous. All the flying through air, leaping, and kicking is right out of bad foreign martial arts movies from the 70's. Trained fighters do not fit like that, especially government trained ones, there are just too many variables. It snaps the reader out of reality into a comic book.

I have read 5 books by Ernie Dempsey so far and I think that The Fourth Prophecy is the best one so far. It has non-stop great action, a corrupt and evil politician. It has great descriptions of the Mexican rain forest and it also has a great psychopathic young murderess, Erika.Too bad she got killed off, she would have been great in a book series of her own. And, of course it has romance, albeit, not graphic in the love affair between Tommy and Sean. Thank goodness.Good job Ernie!

This 14th book in the Sean Wyatt series finds our dynamic duo of Sean and his archeologist best friend Tommy on a private mission in the rainforest of the Yucatán peninsula. Their client, a US congresswoman, has sent them in search of an ancient power that can change the world. While they are being beset by drug cartel members, revolutionary guerrillas and local tribesmen Intent in protecting their prize, things are heating up in Washington, DC. A serial killer is targeting members of Congress whose only connection is an energy bill. And their client is on that hit list.As the action swings between Mexico and the US, the two plots link up in a series of twists and chance encounters with new and old “friends” from Sean’s past. Add in the snarky dialogue the reader has come to expect from these two buddies and you have an entertaining read to while away a lazy weekend.

Once again, Mr. Dempsey has taken us along for a adventure through time and countries to survive the bad guy, find a lost archaeological mystery and save the world! I actually went back to read the other 13+adventures before this came out and thank my lucky stars I discovered Ernest Dempsey's stories several years ago. congrats on another great read Ernest! If this is your first book, go back and enjoy the others, if you are already a fan, we are already waiting for the next one!

I enjoyed this book, like I have most of this series. There was only one book that was kind of not as good, and that was quite a few ago. The story line was good, and it having it take place in different locations was good. Was there would have been more of a surprise in it but over all good book. I am rereading his first ones as well.

About the Author

The United States Citizenship and  Immigration Services (USCIS) is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. USCIS is funded primarily by immigration and naturalization benefit fees charged to applicants and petitioners. Fees collected from individuals or organizations filing immigration benefit requests are deposited into the Immigration Examinations Fee Account (IEFA). Congress created the IEFA in 1988, establishing the authority to recover the full cost of immigration benefit processing. This account represents approximately 95 percent of USCIS’ fiscal year (FY) 2016 total budget authority. The remaining budget authority comes from two other mandatory fee accounts and appropriated funding for the E-Verify program.

Full disclosure: This is my brother's book, although I have to admit I still think it is HILARIOUS! So So funny, well written and entertaining on every level definitely for BOTH kids and adults. My ten year old son is obsessed with J.K. Rowling books, and he says: "Ronan Boyle and the Bridge of Riddles is a funny, unique, and a really cool book. This book is as good as the Harry Potter series, which are my FAVORITE books of all time. I think the leprechaun pickle parlor farting part was really, really, really funny."

A fun breezy read for kids and adults who love humor!

And just in time for St. Patty's day :)

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-This companion to the author's adult titles is geared toward young people who want to get a bit more out of J.K Rowling or Dr. Seuss. Foster uses both of these authors, along with Shakespeare and Homer (not Simpson), to illustrate various approaches to literature. He argues that there is really only one story, that of a journey or quest, and that it takes shape in many forms, in novels, plays, and poems. The book also delves into symbolism, irony, and the political and geographical aspects of literature. Readers will enjoy seeing Green Eggs and Ham from Foster's perspective of how food is often more than just a meal. Of course, he also touches on how the Bible, folk and fairy tales, and ancient literature form the basis of many of our favorite stories. His passion for literature is evident, and the text is readable and encouraging. While it would be a rare reader who would be familiar with every title the author cites, the arguments that he poses are solid and the examples are always apt. Students won't find literary research here, but they will find some valuable guidance on how to read critically and hopefully be inspired to read more widely.-Carol Fazioli, Barth Elementary School, Pottstown, PAα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

Opening with a quickly and effectively illuminated scene from Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and continuing through such high-school syllabus texts as The Odyssey, Shakespeare’s works, a sonnet by Christina Rossetti, and more, this introduction to literary methods, tropes, and symbols is refreshingly accessible. Without condescension, Foster adapts some of the concepts that he presents in his adult titles, including How to Read Literature like a Professor (2003), with kid-friendly examples, such as Dr. Seuss stories that show how a universal literary theme can play out in a specific work without losing its universal meaning. With a closing short story that invites young readers to try out their newfound analytical skills, this slim guidebook can provide language art students with just the right open window to catch the academic breeze of enlightenment without leaving them cold. An essential purchase for all library collections where there are readers new to exploring literature as a fine art, beyond reading for uncritical pleasure. Grades 6-10. --Francisca Goldsmith

I am a huge fan of the original book. I own 60 copies and I use it to teach English10 Honors. It's an excellent resource, but two things drive my students crazy:1. Foster cultivates a voice that's cheeky to the point of arrogance.2. Foster's examples are so esoteric that they've rarely read them and they get lost in the long explanations about them. When I saw this book, I thought: Aha! Change the examples and the tone for kids. PERFECT.But nope. While *some* of the examples have changed, they've changed to things like Dr. Seuss. Not exactly appropriate for my audience. And the tone--even much of the language and many of the examples--is exactly the same.PLUS, he's gotten rid of the "sex" chapters--two chapters that would have done best with a genuine makeover, and two chapters that are essential to navigating some of the banned/challenged books on our booklist.Bummer.

This book is great--I had my principal order a class set to use in my high school English classes. The author goes through specific patterns that students can look for in literature, and what those patterns often mean. This makes it very concrete for students, so they can do more abstract thinking. The title says "for kids" but I would recommend this book for no younger than seventh grade (~12 or 13 years old). The stories and books the author references are more appropriate for secondary students.

My granddaughter’s freshman class is using this book. I bought a copy in order to be able to help her with advice, if need be. One of the first thing’s my granddaughter said to me was, “This book is NOT for kids!” After I read it, I have to agree. While not specific, it does discuss sex in books and symbols that represent sex (e.g. marriage) and other topics beyond the experience of most elementary age children. It’s written in language an eight-year-old could easily understand, but some of the examples and discussions are on topics that are likely beyond the average student in 3rd or 4th grade. The last example in the book would bore them to tears. I’ve worked with children of various ages throughout the years, my daughter is a teacher, and I’ve heard students’ discussions with peers, all of which form the basis of my opinion. All of that said, I believe it’s an excellent book, and totally appropriate for ninth graders. It probably is too easy a book for upper classmen, but this is a book that likely has something new for many students. Instead of ages 8-12, I’d set the ages to 10-14.

Don't be fooled by the title, kids- This is not a boring book. Of course, it's not a very exciting read, but it doesn't contain page after page after page of B, O, R, I, N, G. It's really fun to read, mostly because it's slightly funny, but also because it's literally learning how to make connections between pretty much every book that was ever written- Like a giant conspiracy theory. But I know what you're thinking. "But I don't wanna read a long book about literature! Who wants to study about BOOKS?! For-" Okay, that's quite enough. As I said, it's not boring. Also, this book is more of a branching tutorial on the study of literature. Because, seriously, no one is going to write a five hundred page piece of literature describing literature? I mean, maybe uncle Morty, but... Anyway, this book is extremely useful, and it's not just for kids, despite the title. If you want to impress your English teacher... Give this book a try. Or don't. I can't force you too, but- Hey. Might just improve your grade a bit. Or a lot.

(I'm 14 writing this on my mom's account)this book teaches you how to not only read into books more deeply, but how to write more meaningful stories. It shows you how to intelligently compare books and see how all stories are the same in some aspects. I found this pretty helpful, although some of the examples seemed a little inappropriate for the age group this was trying to appeal to. I doubt many kids have read books like Dracula or a lot of the other works referenced in this book. Even I have never heard of many of the books he talks about, and I am a few years over the suggested age range for this book and LOVE reading. In short, this is a good book, but just doesn't seem like its targeting the right age. It seems like it would be more useful to teenagers, maybe 13 or 14 year olds to 16 year olds. Teenagers might understand the references and be more familiar with the stories this book mentions.

Though it's not the most well-written book I've ever read (which is a little surprising), it does present some interesting perspectives on literature. My sixth-grade students really enjoyed the few chapters that we read together. My biggest complaint is the chapter on vampires as sexual beings. I'm not opposed to that, nor do I disagree; however, that single chapter keeps me from being able to use this book as a free resource in my classroom. While most of the chapters are perfectly usable for bright middle-schoolers, the sexual nature of that chapter "ruins" it. At least at my school. If you have a child who really loves literature (not just reading, but thinking about), then this book will probably be interesting to him or her. But, make sure you are ok with the chapter on vampires.Maybe it should have been called "How To Read Literature Like A Professor: For Teens"?

Definitely for kids. My son was assigned this for high school he felt it was meant for a much younger audience.

As an adult, I enjoyed reading this book. I read the chapter on quests to my homeschooled fifth graders, and I think they learned from it. Mostly, however, I think it's for a bit older age level than fifth/sixth grade, so we will hold off on the remainder.

Slave Stealer, author Jim Duggins' tour de force novel about Voodoo Queen Reyna Royale, is a kaleidoscopic vision of America during the tumultuous years preceding the Civil War. Duggins applies the broadest, most subtle palette imaginable to depict Royale's bizarre, adventurous exploits in behalf of freeing her enslaved black brothers and sisters from their chains. The product of rape by someone in the Thomas Jefferson family, Reyna appears to be white, allowing her to pass through various racial and social contexts undetected in her attempts to free her people. After achieving economic success in San Francisco, she travels East and forms an alliance with a network of abolitionists led by the Conspiracy of Six, prominent Boston industrialists and business tycoons who plot the destruction of the institution of slavery in the South.Reyna, an archetypical liberated woman, represents the organization in Virginia and conducts an Underground Railroad with a route reaching all the way to Canada. But soon her identity is detected and she she is forced to flee West, where she again renews her efforts to free her people. Finally, she is ordered by the Conspiracy of Six to link up with John Brown in his armed effort to free slaves in the South by attacking the U.S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Reyna's mission is to recruit slaves from the various Southern plantations and incite them to rise up in war to support Brown. While Brown's part of the plot is being executed, Reyna is detected and barely escapes with her life. Meanwhile, Brown and his men are foiled at the arsenal and killed, captured, and their leader executed.Duggins has the masterful writing power and psychological depth to portray these exciting, intrigue-filled events in all their color, range, and drama. His descriptions are vivid and indelible, everything from his portrayal of the sultry passions of his heroine to the exquisite, panoramic view he gives us of America during this turbulent period. This is Duggins' masterpiece, but even greater works may appear in the future from this consummate author and artist.

Some of us pick up a book for a taste of adventure. Others to escape. Still others in hopes of finding a more pleasant way to pass the time of day. We may or may not find that adventure, the escapism, or the quickness of the clock. With Dr. Jim Duggins Slave Stealer, you will plunge into an unexpected delight: the pure beauty of writing so eloquent it overshadows all else.Within the first thirty pages, you'll stop to wonder what it is you're feeling. Yes, there's a story of tragedy, of hope and of a dark period of slavery. But that's not it.You turn to the back cover of Jim's book, hoping to learn what it is that causes this new sensation. And you find it. In the first sentence of Dr. Duggins biography, you discover that he studied with a true literary master: James Michener. You know Michener's descriptive works are beyond compare, as he is capable of spending hundreds upon hundreds of words describing the ebb and flow of wind on prairie grasses, riveting the reader to each literary breath. Michener is a master of minutia, pulling his reader into the very core of the story. And it strikes you. This is Dr. Duggins. His writing abilities and careful attention to the smallest descriptive details shows his great respect to the reader and their decision to spend their valuable time with his work.Dr. Duggins' skill is so dramatic, so alluring, that you may find yourself pleasantly floating within the prose of each sentence, nearly forgetting the story line because of Jim's literary skills.Dr., with your permission, I have at random opened my copy of Slave Stealer to no page in particular, closed my eyes and let my pointed finger fall where it may. Dr., with your permission, I'll take this excerpt and share it here, in order to illustrate my point:"The phrase, "it will be mighty sore," was a masterpiece of understatement. Lying on their backs, so close that the ceiling of the compartment touched their noses when the wagon stood still, was nothing compared to what happened when the Canadian slapped the horses with his whip. The wagon lurched forward, raking its human cargo across the rough-hewn floor. Scratchy, cotton fibers filtered down through the floor boards from the bales above and drove them mad with itching in the heated chamber. Dust, sprayed up from the road by the horses hooves and wagon wheels, drifted through the tiny breathing holes to fill their lungs and noses, and muddy their perspiring faces. They tried lying stiff and rigid, and that simply increased the scrapes on their skin when the wagon swerved. They tried relaxing, letting themselves go limp, swaying against the soft bodies of their neighbors, but that failed, too, when bone cracked against bone with the wagon's sudden jerks and jounces. They were miserable and helpless, unable sot move or shift about, and too afraid even to groan with their discomfort. `I twill be mighty sore," didn't begin to describe the agony of that journey."Some of us pick up a book for a taste of adventure. Others to escape. Still others in hopes of finding a more pleasant way to pass the time of day. But for those of us who wish to spend time with a true Wordsmith of the caliber of a James Michener, for no other reason than to completely enjoy the company of a literary poet, may I invite you into the hands and the heart of Dr. Jim Duggins.

Slave Stealer, a Reyna Royale chronicleby Jim DugginsIn this sequel to The Power: A Novel of Voodoo, second of what promises to be a trilogy or more, we follow the adventures of Reyna Royale, VooDoo Queen, an escaped slave who passes as white, and an actual historical figure. The book opens in 1800's San Francisco, where Reyna, a brilliant business woman of many talents and increasing wealth, has established a haven for escaped slaves and freemen, helping them make lives in the city. But she is haunted by memories of life as a slave and feels she must do more. She leaves her various establishments in good hands and takes off to the East coast to join personally in dangerous liberation efforts. Slave Stealer is a real page-turner, rich in historical detail, with actual events, places and players from the turbulent era leading up to the Civil War, including a range of fascinating and well-drawn characters from slave-holders to abolitionists to John Brown on the eve of Harper's Ferry. Also several white-knuckling accounts of movements on the Underground Railroad, including heart-breaking tragedies and hair-breadth escapes. At the heart of it all is Reyna, in this volume a fully imagined woman-of-power, irresistibly beautiful, shrewd and driven, complete with ruthlessness and vulnerabilities, and transcendent in her passion to free her people. Throughout, we are made aware of the price of imposture, hiding one's true self - Reyna lives and travels surrounded by whites, even the most sympathetic of whom must not discover she is black. This painful path is made bearable by what she can accomplish, but also by those break-out moments when she reveals herself to her African congregations as their Voodoo Queen. Fast-paced writing, action-focused, a great read that makes me look forward to the promised next installment!

Excellent Books! Thank You! Daughter loved them. She is able to read and follow along the tips from the book and create wonderful things on Minecraft.Pros:Brand New BooksUpdated Versions of MinecraftKid Loves it!!Cons:Kid comes up to me every 3 minutes to show me something awesome that was createdI have to sit through some of her creation processes and pretend that I am into Minecraft

I really should have read ALL of the reviews instead of just skimming. My 9yo daughter went crazy for Minecraft so I gave in recently. We play video games together (LBP, Disney Infinity, etc.) but I admit Minecraft just bores me to tears. So I wanted to find something to encourage her to do more than just wandering around and digging holes.I really thought this book was going to be something like those Lego instructions that give you step-by-step instructions for building impressive buildings but no. If you're lucky then a few eye-catching structures tell you what materials you need, but otherwise it's mostly a fancy brochure showing what can be done - NOT how to do it for the most part. Case in point is the impressive-looking 'Floating Island' (like a castle that floats in the air). The steps are pretty much just:1. Mark the outline2. Build walls3. Use wood for floors4. Build roofOk, that's a slight over-simplification, but not much of one. Still, if you've ever wanted to know how to dig a pool there are instructions for that as well as a handful of other things. But most of the book is just pretty pictures that you can one day aspire to make for yourself without telling anybody how you actually did it.Don't get me wrong, my daughter is thrilled with this book (probably as much for the pretty Minecraft pictures as the very few projects that have instructions), but if you're considering buying it, bear my subject line in mind. It's not what you might think it is.

This was a gift for my son. I purchased it along with three other Minecraft books for his birthday. He was so excited to have them! I went from being the evil mom who makes his empty the trash to the best mom ever is 20 seconds. Yay me!He really likes all of the tips and tricks found in these books, that you may never learn unless you had the book or years of experience playing the game. Some of his friends told him about some of the tips, but others he discovered himself in the book. And if you have a non-reader it's a great way to get your non-reader to read something! (Another win!) I haven't found the book on AR Book Find but there are other Minecraft books listed.

This book was not what I thought. I assumed it was a basic overview for getting started, a book that I could read with my 5-year-old (beginning reader) son who has just started with Minecraft and asks "How do I...?" and "What does this do?" the whole time he's playing. However, it turned out to be more of a "recipe" book for recreating some rather complicated and impressive structures that other users have made.My son now watches YouTube Kids videos on Minecraft for visual inspiration.

This book is just beautiful with some absolutely gorgeous images and key steps for completing the projects inside. Not a complete step by step tutorial, but a beautiful, essential reference for the beginning player to the advanced builder. Lots of tips and hints and huge community builds to learn from. I would love world downloads or YouTube videos so that I could explore some of the projects shown more closely, but maybe those are in the back of the book, I'm taking my time absorbing the details in this one.

Very nice, sturdy, beautiful quality. It includes some in-depth builds and gorgeous colored pictures and references. My ten year old son adored it, since he wanted to start building more complicated structures. Would absolutely recommend the series.

The book is nice and colorful does explain how to do different things in the game. All the information can be found on the web, but for a child this would be more exciting Just because of the colorful graphics

This is an amazing book with one gorgeous picture after another, My grandson was close to tears in gratitude as he turned page after page of directions and drawings. I hadn't seen anything in the description that indicated the number of drawings and certainly not their lavish beauty. if you have a "Minecraft child or grandchild" who wants to do more, I think this is a winner.

The book flap and reviews of "Ball Lightning" reveal little about the story or plot, so I thought I'd talk a little about that without giving too much of the game away. It should be noted that the author (who claims to have personally experienced ball lightning) discusses the book's genesis in the afterword, which was originally released in China prior to the Three Body Problem at the publisher's behest. TBP name-checks ball lightning once or twice along with physicist Ding Yi, but mainly as teaser references the way Michael Moorcock might. The story feels familiar though as renegade scientists, quantum physics, military concerns and heroines figure prominently and there's even a hint of aliens (Trisolarans?) watching us from afar.In a nutshell, the story revolves around an atmospheric scientist who lost his parents to ball lightning getting sucked into a military attempt to weaponize the phenomena. The cast of characters expands to include others with deep personal connections to tragedies involving ball lightning or advanced weaponry in general, with Cold War-era research that goes nowhere until renegade physicist Ding Yi solves the puzzle and progress - involving some truly crazy quantum extrapolations - begins apace. Experimental weapons obsessive Lin Yun serves as the heroine driven by personal demons to exploit Ball Lightning (which turns out to have unusually broad and magical applications) in its war against the United States and perhaps indirectly, avenge her mother's death."Ball Lightning" is a smoother read than the "Three Body Problem" was; the relationships are better developed, the storytelling less forced, and the political Great Leap Forward tropes that weighed down TBP are nowhere to be found. The future science though is not up to the same level that TBP was, making suspension of disbelief a bit harder the second time around but you won't regret it, because... well, it's got a bit of a Hollywood ending. In fact, the whole book has a bit of a Hero's Journey feel to it, possibly written with film in mind. A great beach read!

Sixty one years ago when I was in high school I could recognize 3 shining stars in science fiction, Azimov, Clark, Heinlein. Now 61 years later there is an even more brilliant star Cixin Liu a Chinese science fiction writer who has won multiple awards. His latest book just published in English is Ball Lightening. This story is worth whatever award that it might win. I waited months for it to be published and it was so worth the wait!I finished the book Ball Lightening by Cixin Liu which is easily the best SF book that I've read in years even better than the Three Body series. The story plays on advanced physics. The theory Liu about which he writes is not only speculative but incredibly inventive and this carries the reader through the book as fast as one is able to read. And the story concludes with a bang far from a whimper of disappointment.Yet the book is not only about science, his characters are very well developed. By the end of the book one has developed an interest in them and they appear as very real people; and when as I read along I developed and interest and concern in the characters none of whom are flat.So Cixin has developed an inventive science based novel as well as excellent character development. And finally like Azimove he lays out a world social milieu which had become responsive to the development of the science that the author has created. This is a remarkable book. Once started I found that every available moment I had to find myself a quiet place to read. The only moment of disappointment I had during my reading the book was the sentence "At the moment, I'm sure that the quantum rose will smile at me" -- Cixin Liu's last sentence of the book.

I didn't realize, until reading the afterword, that this was written before The Three-Body Problem. If you enjoyed that series, then you definitely want to read this. I highly recommend it. Definitely makes you think, but not as challenging as the 3BP series. I plan to re-read those books after reading this. Can't wait for more books from Liu.

I recently read Cixin Liu’s science fiction Three Body Problem trilogy, and was pretty much blown away. The second book in the series, The Dark Forest, may be the finest science fiction work I have ever read (and I’ve read hundreds). I was anxious to read more of his work and purchased a collection of short stories as soon as I found it. Overall, it was a good read, just not up to the level of the trilogy. This novel, while recently translated into English, was actually written prior to the Three Body Problem. The subject is the atmospheric phenomenon of ball lightning and a group of researchers and military personnel that study it, capture it and attempt to weaponize it. I found the early parts of the novel to drag somewhat, but then advance strongly to a powerful ending. The story has a good amount of highly technical language and theories concerning quantum mechanics, which are obviously over the head of almost anyone reading the book, however the author does a masterful job of making the story readable and understandable, without the necessity of a graduate level degree in physics. Cixin Liu is a fantastic story teller and a master in the field of science fiction.

I appreciated the explanation of where Ball Lightng fits in his work as a whole, as this book is very different than the 3 Body series, one of my all time favorites. That said, the precision with which speculation is clothed in stunning imagery, that compounds into complex metaphors--the nearly invisible space bending macroelectrons, the slow fadeouts of quantum phenomena writ large, the perfect mirror that Lin Yun stands on , the pool of sky and passing clouds above, below, Lin Yun neither existent nor non-existent --a thoroughly Buddhist texture throughout.

This was an adorable little retelling, fun and light--and painfully short. So short I never felt like I got to know the characters, and while the actual plot of the story didn't deserve more time, the characters definitely did. I finished it in about an hour and a half (tops) of mellow reading, and came away wishing it was about twice as long, and filled with Rynn actually interacting with her love interest, not to mention her awesome horse (who did, in fairness, get the most "screen time" of the side characters, as he deserved). Most of the side character development was the princess, the horse, and the antagonist, and none of them actually felt "developed" so much as "well at least they're present."I have mixed feelings on this whole novella, and it's made me uncertain about the series. It seems like, if they're all this short, it would've been more enjoyable to release them as one book compilation instead of a staggered release of too-short stories that (judging by this one) tease you for the next part which isn't out yet instead of being a wink before you hop into the next story.A Goose Girl is cute and fun and I wouldn't recommend against reading it, but I don't feel inclined to tell anyone they should read it based on its own merits. It feels incomplete, like the outline of a story, missing the filler that makes it actually a story. But on the other hand, it really is cheerful and bright, and I wouldn't mind rereading it later as a quick little pick-me-up.Yeah, I really can't decide how I feel about this. I think it's more of a $0.99 novella, just on length alone, which is something to consider. For those who consider wordcount, I don't know the actual number, but this felt like about 30k.

I love KM Shea and have read nearly all her books. I have also referred many of her books to others with positive feedback from them. Unfortunately, this particular story fell very flat for me. I felt like the majority of the story took place in Rynn's head; her thoughts. Relationships weren't developed at all and everything was extremely rushed at the end. There was so much potential for this story and I liked the twist on the original. I was so looking forward to this release, but I really feel it should have been a full-length book instead of a novella.I really don't like to leave a poor review for a Shea book, and will definitely continue to read her future publications, but she has so many other stories that are better than this (try Red Rope of Fate, Cinderella and the Colonel and others of the Timeless Fairy Tale collection, or the King Arthur series, etc.). These are all favorites which I have read and re-read.

I loved this! The heroine is sweet, practical, and mouthy as many of her protagonists are, and unlike the original goose girl, I enjoyed that the talking horse was a more prominent character and the princess wasn't the central POV. Plus, for some reason I pictured Falada (the talking horse) as speaking with Liam Neeson's voice just from the description, which was awesome. Did anyone else get that?Anyway, I loved the world building and am now going through the rest of the Entwined Tales by different collaborating authors. All of them are fairytales with a new twist, connected together by one family's dealings with a cranky fairy godfather, and clean reading. I can recommend these without any misgivings to friends and family.

The Entwined Tales series is a series of six fairy tale adaptations written by six different authors about characters who must deal with the trials and tribulations of an oafish fairy godfather named Mortimer. The first book in the series is A Goose Girl by K.M. Shea, based on the Grimm Brothers fairy tale "The Goose Girl." I've become familiar with K.M. Shea's writing style as of late, and while I enjoyed some of her books more than others, I must say that this was a very fun read. I became reacquainted with the "Goose Girl" fairy tale recently after reading a version of it in Magic at Midnight last week, so I was eager to see someone else's take on the story."The Goose Girl" by the Brothers Grimm is a fairy tale about a jealous maid who stole a princess's identity while they were traveling to a foreign kingdom so that she could marry the prince and become a princess without anyone knowing the truth. The scheme would have gone through without a hitch if it hadn't been for the princess's talking horse named Falada, who communicated her secret even in death. K.M. Shea's novel was a different take on the story in which Rynn, Princess Davina's maid, was forced against her will to take her lady's place as princess so that Davina could seek adventure and shirk her responsibility to marry a man she had never met just in case he might be unattractive. She may sound like your average Disney Princess, but Davina was more of a comical character who hated responsibility and never quite thought things through all the way. As a result of her foolishness, she ended up getting robbed and seeking employment at the very castle where she had sent Rynn in her place.Rynn, on the other hand, was a terrific heroine and welcome breath of fresh air from the two-dimensional maid in the original fairy tale. Unlike most girls her age, Rynn had no desire to become a princess or to marry a prince. She was loyal to Princess Davina but even more loyal to her kingdom, which is why she was completely against the idea of such a treasonous act. Unfortunately for Rynn, Princess Davina had paid off the guards to ensure that her silly scheme went off successfully and used magic to keep Rynn quiet about her true identity. Rynn quickly realized that something was amiss when Captain Hulderic threatened her life at the slightest prospect of her failing to cooperate with the arrangement. Unfortunately, there was very little she could do about it thanks to her magical vow of silence. Her fairy godfather Mortimer was no help to her either by giving her the ability to control wind.Falada, the talking horse, played a smaller role in this book than he did in the fairy tale. With his occasional one line zingers, it was easy to forget he could speak. He often provided comic relief in more of a "Mr. Ed" style than that of a fantasy sidekick. Falada related to Rynn because they were both placed in situations that they couldn't control due to their sense of responsibility to the royal family. His ability to talk was another unwanted magical gift that the air-headed Princess Davina often took for granted without taking the time to get to know her equestrian companion. Falada provided Rynn with a mode of transportation when she went to investigate Davina's situation as the new goose girl. Rynn also spent a lot of time talking to Conrad, the young goose boy who seemed to know a lot more than he let on.A Goose Girl is great fun for anyone who loves fairy tales. It was very interesting to read about a heroine who was forced into being a princess against her will. It was also funny to read about a princess who longs for adventure but doesn't know the first thing about taking care of herself. The book was short and fast-paced, making for an enjoyable and rewarding story experience without a big time commitment. I think this might be my favorite book I've read by K.M. Shea. The Entwined Tales series is a great idea both in concept and execution.

Against Football: One Fan's Reluctant Manifesto, by Steve Almond

From School Library Journal

A longtime devoted football fan, Almond spends much of the first quarter of this book solidifying his football bona fides before beginning his onslaught of reasons that he feels he can no longer watch his favorite game. These arguments are familiar—concussions and sub-concussive hits; the game's twisted monetary incentives; its cult of violence; racism; and its vexed relationship with the American capitalism and patriotism. But the sheer weight of the evidence is impressive and hard to ignore. Even when Almond's arguments seem strained, he is able to put the burden of proof squarely on readers to disprove him with more than a simple dismissal. Particularly strong is his complete demolition of the argument that the mere popularity and fixity of the game somehow puts it above criticism. Many football fans will react with derision, and many non-fans will consider his points self-evident: both are wrong. These are arguments that deserve to be considered deeply and grappled with, and teens—who have not yet devoted their lives or opinions to or against the sport—are in a perfect position to take Almond's manifesto seriously.—Mark Flowers, John F. Kennedy Library, Vallejo, CA

“Almond is dead serious: Supporting a spectacle that causes brain damage is immoral."—New York Times Book Review“[Almond] is a very good writer, and his analysis of problems confronting the game today is well done."—Washington Post“Almond is a shifty cornerback of a writer: rangy, sarcastic, offbeat. And every once in a while, he’ll blindside you with a big hit."—New York Times “An unapologetic, frontal assault on the game's role in American culture."—Los Angeles Times “Steve Almond's blistering book Against Football: One Fan's Reluctant Manifesto is exactly what it advertises itself to be: an exasperated, frustrated, wide-ranging argument that the time has come to abandon football — particularly but not exclusively the NFL — as a sport built on violence, racism, economic exploitation of poor kids, corrupt dealmaking with local governments over stadiums, and a willingness to find it entertaining to watch people suffer brain damage."—Linda Holmes, NPR“A devastating multi-pronged attack."—Newsweek “Powerful... Almond is a sympathetic narrator, his evidence incontrovertible, the moral authority firmly on his side."—Harper's Magazine“A passionate and elegantly written book that finally overpowered any rationalization I could come up with to justify watching more football."—New York Times, Dealbook“A helpful and thoughtful read that traces the criticisms of the game and the men who run it."—Bitch Magazine“In Steve Almond’s Against Football, a book filled with 'obnoxious opinions' by the writer’s own admittance—and they’re not that bad—Almond makes a case for the fact that football, and the NFL specifically, is at the root of a toxic, pernicious, deadly and deadening culture in America. The book came out on August 26th, and it’s taken a mere two weeks for Almond to be proven right on a national scale, in the ugliest of fashions."—Flavorwire“Against Football is a book that kicks and prods and fights with itself and ourselves. Almond is asking himself and us to drop the ironic distance, open our eyes, and truly look at the dangerous, vile, beautiful, fun, highly corrupted, and horrifically corrupting corporate behemoth we spend so much of our money and leisure time enraptured by, and know what it is that we are doing, and what we are supporting."—The Millions“Steve Almond’s slim but muscular broadside slams into the wall of sanctimonious hokum served up by the NCAA, NFL, and their sycophantic sportswriter enablers."—PopMatters, Best Nonfiction Books of 2014“[Almond's] persuasive book dares fans to consider how long they can continue to ignore football’s obvious flaws in order to preserve their weekend ritual."—Barron's“Almond doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but sometimes it’s enough to raise the right questions at the right time. Reading this book can serve as something of a litmus test. I've seen no critic — I use the term loosely — actually engage his arguments. Mostly they are flinging ad hominem non sequiturs. Those who react strongly against it — including the many who have flamed, insulted and aggressively mocked Almond in public forums — come off looking like reflections of the flawed culture he identifies. Critics react with unthinking passion, unleashing mouthsful of pejoratives, often questioning Almond's manhood or sexuality in bemusingly "male" term. For example, suggesting he possesses female genitalia reveals an essential misogyny; suggesting he must have a "big vagina" — seriously, it's a thing among his critics — is just stupid, a transparent and reflexive attempt to overlay deeply ingrained male insecurities and obsession with size.Make no mistake: Almond is a true fan of football, especially of — as we say in Broncos country — "the hated Raiders." But he's also a thoughtful man who sees the stark contradictions and dubious ethics of supporting our modern civic religion cum blood sport. He focuses a good deal of his manifesto — for it is that, rather than a deeper research project — on the problem of brain injuries, but he identifies other, very real issues: misogyny, hyper-machoism, militarism-jingoism, rich owners fleecing and blackmailing taxpayers, tribalism over what is really little more than (in his words), "brightly colored laundry," the obvious disconnect between a highly professionalized (though its players are unpaid!) professional football farm system being connected to institutions of higher learning, the incredible amount of time invested in passive observation, and more.As a life-long fan — my father took me to my first college game at age 6 and I still hold those season tickets and, try as I might, I've never successfully been able to avert my gaze from the game — I find Almond's manifesto persuasive and damning. Even before I read it I had resolved to, shall we say, reduce my "using" of football this season: I'm not going to every home game for my college team and will limit watching football on TV. I have always loved watching the game, but I intend to learn how else I might spend that time. This is four stars rather than five because I think Almond would have better served his purpose by investing more effort and turning it from manifesto into a more substantive, documented piece of research.

Ug. I feel like someone died. I feel terrible after reading this book. I would say do not read this if you want to keep liking football and still have a heart and soul.I can’t disagree with any of it. Football causes brain damage. Football is sanctioned violence, exploitation of athletes and on and on. “The struggle playing out in living rooms across the country is that of a civilian class that has created, for its own entertainment, a caste of warriors too big and strong and fast to play a child’s game without grievously injuring one another.” (Page 147)I bought this book in August of this year but waited until the Philadelphia Eagles started to really suck before I started reading it. My other teams (Redskins and Giants – I can explain) aren’t any better so it’s a good year for me to nobly read the truth about a game that I have put way too much importance on in my life. When I was 10, I had a small picture of Jesus on my bedroom wall, the kind with a swell glow in the dark cross. Nice. There were also about 20 large Washington Redskins posters. Sorry Jesus.I’m thankful the author acknowledges the good parts about football. At least the nostalgia. The fun as kids. The thrill of your team winning a big game, If they ever do. Electric football. Those plastic helmets in the gumball machine. My dad playing football. Nerf Football. The Redskins. Larry Brown. John Riggins. Doug Williams. Think they have brain damage? Yeah.Anyway I hope this book is a landmark book. Maybe it will be. But NFL Football is a tremendous cultural emotional momentum to turn around. What are we going to replace it with? Soccer? Hunting? It is also mind boggling that the NFL is a non taxible non profit corporation. Gee can I donate? Oh wait, I already have. Too much.I’m going to try to not watch football. And when someone says try they usually mean fail. Still I’m thankful for this book. Maybe I'll get a life. Maybe I'll get a big ol Jesus poster.

Steve, as no doubt revealed in these pages through wit and wisdom, reveals his VERY real struggle with the ongoing football concussion crisis. Question is: will anyone take this well-documented admonition seriously or will we cast this thorny issue aside or, worse, pretend that it doesn't exist at all?I, like Steve, am a lifelong devotee of this violent, brutal game that is American football. I can't promise a clean break because, like SO many, football has become one of our all-consuming addictions. Unless we live under stone, football's promotions are everywhere and stoke our excitement to watch and watch and.....More than this, heartwarming traditions surrounding viewership has infiltrated us. We HAVE to watch because what would we do while everyone is at Uncle Billy's house watching the "BIG" game. They are all "BIG" games, aren't they? The NFL Marketing machine would definitely want us to believe this. What Steve says here needs to be said for the better of the game. It would be VERY hard to imagine these United States without football but we can't, also, allow brutality on this level go unrecognized either.
