Slave Stealer, author Jim Duggins' tour de force novel about Voodoo Queen Reyna Royale, is a kaleidoscopic vision of America during the tumultuous years preceding the Civil War. Duggins applies the broadest, most subtle palette imaginable to depict Royale's bizarre, adventurous exploits in behalf of freeing her enslaved black brothers and sisters from their chains. The product of rape by someone in the Thomas Jefferson family, Reyna appears to be white, allowing her to pass through various racial and social contexts undetected in her attempts to free her people. After achieving economic success in San Francisco, she travels East and forms an alliance with a network of abolitionists led by the Conspiracy of Six, prominent Boston industrialists and business tycoons who plot the destruction of the institution of slavery in the South.Reyna, an archetypical liberated woman, represents the organization in Virginia and conducts an Underground Railroad with a route reaching all the way to Canada. But soon her identity is detected and she she is forced to flee West, where she again renews her efforts to free her people. Finally, she is ordered by the Conspiracy of Six to link up with John Brown in his armed effort to free slaves in the South by attacking the U.S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Reyna's mission is to recruit slaves from the various Southern plantations and incite them to rise up in war to support Brown. While Brown's part of the plot is being executed, Reyna is detected and barely escapes with her life. Meanwhile, Brown and his men are foiled at the arsenal and killed, captured, and their leader executed.Duggins has the masterful writing power and psychological depth to portray these exciting, intrigue-filled events in all their color, range, and drama. His descriptions are vivid and indelible, everything from his portrayal of the sultry passions of his heroine to the exquisite, panoramic view he gives us of America during this turbulent period. This is Duggins' masterpiece, but even greater works may appear in the future from this consummate author and artist.

Some of us pick up a book for a taste of adventure. Others to escape. Still others in hopes of finding a more pleasant way to pass the time of day. We may or may not find that adventure, the escapism, or the quickness of the clock. With Dr. Jim Duggins Slave Stealer, you will plunge into an unexpected delight: the pure beauty of writing so eloquent it overshadows all else.Within the first thirty pages, you'll stop to wonder what it is you're feeling. Yes, there's a story of tragedy, of hope and of a dark period of slavery. But that's not it.You turn to the back cover of Jim's book, hoping to learn what it is that causes this new sensation. And you find it. In the first sentence of Dr. Duggins biography, you discover that he studied with a true literary master: James Michener. You know Michener's descriptive works are beyond compare, as he is capable of spending hundreds upon hundreds of words describing the ebb and flow of wind on prairie grasses, riveting the reader to each literary breath. Michener is a master of minutia, pulling his reader into the very core of the story. And it strikes you. This is Dr. Duggins. His writing abilities and careful attention to the smallest descriptive details shows his great respect to the reader and their decision to spend their valuable time with his work.Dr. Duggins' skill is so dramatic, so alluring, that you may find yourself pleasantly floating within the prose of each sentence, nearly forgetting the story line because of Jim's literary skills.Dr., with your permission, I have at random opened my copy of Slave Stealer to no page in particular, closed my eyes and let my pointed finger fall where it may. Dr., with your permission, I'll take this excerpt and share it here, in order to illustrate my point:"The phrase, "it will be mighty sore," was a masterpiece of understatement. Lying on their backs, so close that the ceiling of the compartment touched their noses when the wagon stood still, was nothing compared to what happened when the Canadian slapped the horses with his whip. The wagon lurched forward, raking its human cargo across the rough-hewn floor. Scratchy, cotton fibers filtered down through the floor boards from the bales above and drove them mad with itching in the heated chamber. Dust, sprayed up from the road by the horses hooves and wagon wheels, drifted through the tiny breathing holes to fill their lungs and noses, and muddy their perspiring faces. They tried lying stiff and rigid, and that simply increased the scrapes on their skin when the wagon swerved. They tried relaxing, letting themselves go limp, swaying against the soft bodies of their neighbors, but that failed, too, when bone cracked against bone with the wagon's sudden jerks and jounces. They were miserable and helpless, unable sot move or shift about, and too afraid even to groan with their discomfort. `I twill be mighty sore," didn't begin to describe the agony of that journey."Some of us pick up a book for a taste of adventure. Others to escape. Still others in hopes of finding a more pleasant way to pass the time of day. But for those of us who wish to spend time with a true Wordsmith of the caliber of a James Michener, for no other reason than to completely enjoy the company of a literary poet, may I invite you into the hands and the heart of Dr. Jim Duggins.

Slave Stealer, a Reyna Royale chronicleby Jim DugginsIn this sequel to The Power: A Novel of Voodoo, second of what promises to be a trilogy or more, we follow the adventures of Reyna Royale, VooDoo Queen, an escaped slave who passes as white, and an actual historical figure. The book opens in 1800's San Francisco, where Reyna, a brilliant business woman of many talents and increasing wealth, has established a haven for escaped slaves and freemen, helping them make lives in the city. But she is haunted by memories of life as a slave and feels she must do more. She leaves her various establishments in good hands and takes off to the East coast to join personally in dangerous liberation efforts. Slave Stealer is a real page-turner, rich in historical detail, with actual events, places and players from the turbulent era leading up to the Civil War, including a range of fascinating and well-drawn characters from slave-holders to abolitionists to John Brown on the eve of Harper's Ferry. Also several white-knuckling accounts of movements on the Underground Railroad, including heart-breaking tragedies and hair-breadth escapes. At the heart of it all is Reyna, in this volume a fully imagined woman-of-power, irresistibly beautiful, shrewd and driven, complete with ruthlessness and vulnerabilities, and transcendent in her passion to free her people. Throughout, we are made aware of the price of imposture, hiding one's true self - Reyna lives and travels surrounded by whites, even the most sympathetic of whom must not discover she is black. This painful path is made bearable by what she can accomplish, but also by those break-out moments when she reveals herself to her African congregations as their Voodoo Queen. Fast-paced writing, action-focused, a great read that makes me look forward to the promised next installment!
