I like mythical themes, but felt this book tried too hard to be a typical young adult romance. Hope is a Sphinx, her mother just having been killed by the gods because of the curse. She has only one other family member, her aunt Petra, a daughter of Artemis. Hope and Petra know how to remain hidden and stay on the run from Hades' assassins, called Skia. They have a finely tuned sense for danger, are alert at all times, and have the ability and will to act instantly when danger threatens. That's why I was frustrated when, so many times, Hope took unnecessary risks and went back into dangerous areas even when there seemed to be no real motivation to do so. Not all of her stupid behavior could be blamed on her infatuation with the handsome, capable Athan. She was just uncharacteristically, unbelievably dumb sometimes when long experience should have taught her otherwise. Because of this, my review is three stars instead of five.

Everyone cannot pull of a story like this one. The research, the creativity, and the meticulous writing is not easy. But Raye Wagner must be a Goddess herself because this book is absolutely fabulous. Curse of the Sphinx is mysterious, intriguing, engaging, and full of adventure. And to top it all of it has a hint of romance that gave my heart palpitations. The mythology was well researched and impressive. Having the Gods and it's history known in the modern world added a new level of amazing to the plot than if it were to be set in the history it was written about. From the names and history to the way the characters spoke, everything was so believable. I felt myself being swept up in the story from beginning to end and trusting that it would take me on a ride and journey I would never forget.Hope was an incredibly strong girl having to take on some much at a young age while also being burdened with a curse she did not ask for. I admired how she lived with the many struggles in her life and despite all of them still opened herself up to friendships and even love.I loved Athan to absolute pieces. His confidence and obvious affection for Hope was so cute. I adored him. His story definitely kept me on my toes and left me wanting to know more. His chemistry with Hope was so great and I loved seeing their friendship develop because of his persistence and charm. This book is a great start to what I think will be an epic series. The writing is excellent, the characters are endearing, and the story has the perfect balance of action and heart. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

I'm always in search for a great series and in the Sphinx series I found a jewel! Sometimes YA series can be corny and very unrealistic but Raye Wagner has done a GREAT job making this story come to life. I've read all the books so far including the novella's and am awaiting the release of the next book coming out this month (June 2017).I'm obsessed with mythology and this series is very well written!I highly recommend this series to all! The main character isn't sexually active which is a plus in my book. I'd say this series would be good for 13+.

DNF - I made it to 65% before giving up, just couldn't take anymore of this. The over all feel of this book is as a Debbie downer, but not in the tear inducing emotional turmoil from the character, just nothing positive happened to balance all the bad stuff happening. This moved at a snails pace, with nothing really happening that made any sense. I still have no idea what the Sphinx is (other than the shape change) that made it what everyone considered a monster. Or how the demigods & gods played into the reputation of the Sphinx. Just none of it made sense to me by 65% or even seemed to make sense to the main character that is a Sphinx. It also felt like it was written in a parallel universe, since the world around Seattle knows about demigods/Gods etc existing. Nothing really fell into place, and on top of it, the main character, Hope, was not a great character to feel connected to. It felt like everything that happened was partially (or all) her fault. I was struggling to just keep my eyes open when reading. I even stopped & watched a re-run movie rather than read, which I normally don't do.

This is a great first in a series book that was hard to put down. I love Greek mythology and this story does not disappoint. We meet Hope, a 17-year old girl who needs to stay hidden. She lives with her mom and they are always dodging the enemy. But who exactly is that? Of course it's demigods and the Skia. Both Hope and her mom need to lay low, blend in and not make friends. And this is fine with Hope, until her mom dies leaving her alone. Against her mom's (and aunt's) drilled in instructions, Hope does make some friends and even gets a boyfriend (Athan). But Athen isn't who he seems. He's keeping secrets, too.

This is a young adult book with some great new twists on the demigod storyline. If you enjoyed the middle grade books of Rick Riordan, but need something a little more romance filled, this first book in the series is a promising place to start.Hope is a monster. She knows this and labels herself freely. But she's not a Gorgon, siren, or three headed beast. She's the Sphinx. This world is interesting, because everyone accepts Greek mythology as real. They believe in gods and goddesses, demigods, but monsters are extinct. The world accepts these things.Throw in some cool jobs for demigods and monsters bent in hunting and destroying them, and this is incredibly interesting. One star off because in a few places it felt like an important moments were rushed through, leaving a confusing tangle of words or actions. A few scenes were repetitive, too. Still. An enjoyable read.
