Let’s face it, most pagan anthologies suck. In most cases the only people who read pagan anthologies are those who contributed to them. Hekate Her Sacred Fires however, is not one of those anthologies and is still my favorite anthology to date. Edited by author Sorita d’Este, the founder of the Covenant of Hekate and the worldwide Rite of Her Sacred Fires, Sorita is considered a modern expert on the history and devotion of the goddess Hekate. The book features over fifty different authors and it’s the diversity of these authors that bring this anthology strength. Hellenic Reconstructionists, Wiccans, Theistic Satanists and daemonaltors, Theurgists and Pagans and Occultists of all flavors lend their visions of Hekate to showcase what a vastly encompassing and complex goddess Hekate is. This anthology is a cornucopia of diverse ritual, poetry, art, personal experiences and musings on Hekate. Coming in at 307 pages, the book itself is a just slightly larger in size of Raymond Buckland’s “Big Blue Book”, so it’s not a very small anthology.Sorita d’Este who has authored other books on Hekate such as Hekate Liminal Rites and Hekate: Keys to the Crossroads provides a fantastic introduction into the history of Hekate, her cults, offerings, associated and conflated goddesses and male god companions. She then provides a massive timeline chart spanning about 20 pages from 6,000 BCE to the present time with different reliefs, coins, statues and depictions of Hekate throughout history. Aside from Sorita, the anthology’s contributors range from lesser-known more private devotees to well known published authors. This books is great for learning more about Hekate in the modern day and how she has touched the lives of many modern practitioners. Don’t read this book expecting to learn about the historical Hekate in depth (though there’s plenty in Sorita’s introduction to give you a simple understanding and there’s also a list of book resources provided on the very first page). That’s not what this book is nor what makes it so unique and special. The book ends with a glossary of words the reader may be unfamiliar with and then finishes with a transcript of the global Rite of Her Sacred Fires. This is a book that I feel any devotee of Hekate, regardless of their path should own, if only to learn how Hekate interacts with those of paths outside of their own and to gain a larger perspective of who Hekate is as a goddess today instead of something confined and bound only to the past.Contributors to this anthology consists of Aedos Alala, Amber Rose, Amelia Ounsted, Andrea Salgado-Reyes, Brian Andrews, Catamara Rosarium, Connie Silver, David Rankine, Diane M. Champigny, Dorn Simon-Sinnott, Edaterina Ilieva, Emily Carding, Georgi Mischev, Hansa, Harry Barron, Henrik Holmdahl, Izzy Purplespoon, Jade Sol Luna, Jean Marie Feddercke, Jen Ricci, John Canard, Katherine Sutherland, Kay Gillard, Lezley Forster, Madre van der Merwe, Magin Rose, Mark Alan Smith, Michael Ellis, Morgana Sythove, Naza Cogo, Nikki Cullen, Orryelle Defenstrate-Bascule, Petra Schollern, Raven Digitalis, Richard A. Derks, Sara Croft, Shani Oates, Shay Skepevski, Soror Basilisk, Tara Sanchez, Thomas Star, Tim Furlow, Tina Georgitis, Tinnekka Bebout, Trystyn M. Branwynn, Vikki Bramshaw, Vlasta Mijac and Yuri Robbers.

The editor (i.e., compiler) of Sacred Fires tells you upfront that she doesn't agree with all of portrayals of/claims about Hecate in this anthology. She also tells you upfront that some of the writers have English as a second or third language and that there are some language issues. She says she edited them lightly, trying to maintain the author's voice. As an English instructor and a freelance editor, I agree that keeping the writer's voice is commendable, but the problem with d'Este's explanation is that she, as the editor, doesn't know her grammar, either. Furthermore, apparently the publisher, Avalonia, doesn't have any editors. I was horrified to find a wide variety of major grammatical errors (run-on sentences/fused sentences, comma splices, and other major comma errors) in addition to word choice errors. In some essays, this was merely annoying, but in others, it led to impaired reading. I ran across sentences that were too confusing to figure out. I understand that trying to write in a second language is hard--I've had to do it before--but that is what an editor is for. And, frankly, some of the people making horrible mistakes had English as their first language. (d'Este herself has misplaced commas in at least two of her books--commas that are misplaced enough to distract the reader.)Having such bad grammar in this book is embarrassing for the Pagan community. It makes us look either unintelligent or uneducated, and that's the last thing we need added to our reputation. That said, I found some of the essays to be enlightening, and I found others pleasantly supported my own experiences or cosmology. For this reason, I'm glad I bought this book and read it, and that is also why I gave the book 4 stars. However, at least two of the contributors apparently have either a severe neurosis or borderline psychosis. Their reported experiences were so over-the-top that in one case I had to stop reading and move to the next essay. It's just as well that d'Este says she doesn't agree with all the contributors. If I thought she did, I wouldn't read any of her other work beyond the ones I have. This was my first foray into reading an anthology of essays by Pagans on their patron goddess, and certainly I found it to be an exercise in critical thinking. I will read other anthologies, though, because among the collection there were jewels. Also, d'Este's introductory essay was helpful and one of the best parts of the collection.

A very well written and very informative book about Hecate. Especially in the timelines section the authors link Hecate to the minoan snake goddess of the minoan empire. My only pet peeve is that in the editorial notes they list the another possibility of the other pronunciation of Hecate's name as e-ka-tay. No the Greek pronunciation is actually eh-ka-tee. Eh as in pet. Ka as in car and tee as in tea. You check this out YouTube under get to know a deity by psycho sorcerer. However as the editorial notes states pronounced it the best way you are comfortable with. Which iam comfortable with pronouncing this way as others pronounced it as heh kate. Other than that enjoy reading the books of Sorita d'Este

The content of this book is written by a variety in authors who describes their relationship to the Goddess Hecate. There is also a great deal of historical, credible information regarding Hecate. I found some of the anthropological/historical terminology to be of great value in understanding this Goddess, her evolution on a collective conscious level on a global scale, probable areas where She might have originated and a variety of personal experiences. I have not finished this book yet, it's a very large soft cover book and I suspect I will continue reading/learning from this book and its content. If you are curious about this Goddess I highly recommend it.

As a person who has gotten the, "calling," from the Goddess Hekate, I found this anthology to be immensely helpful and informative. The many personal experiences highlight the diverse practices and beliefs of other people who are also called to Hekate. I feel that this should be a must have introduction when one begins the path.
