Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

Another case where I REALLY wish for half stars! 3.2 Goodreads; 3.7 AmazonThe characters in this M/M fantasy romance were appealing, especially cheerful, geeky, physically awkward David (liking him from the sample tempted me to get this, from a new-to-me author, though winning a $5 Kindle cash giveaway prize convinced me to go ahead and do it) but it did feel a bit light/ superficial. It requires suspension of disbelief to buy into their being truly in love to last, not just a bit more than physically attracted. The Beauty & the Beast elements were very loosely connected to the original plot (my favorite fairy tale theme), too.The way David's ignorance of things the supes (supernaturals) took for granted led him to new ways of solving some of their problems was cute and clever, but by the end, he was by some measures a cross between a Gary Stu and a McGuffin. The realization required to break Alun's curse was a good touch, but he's still got a ways to go tempering his tendencies toward blaming himself and toward ordering when he should be asking. As for David's aunts, I don't blame him for being frustrated and upset over important facts having been kept from him for far too long, robbing him of the chance to make his own decisions. The inflexible and dubious rules governing the fae are another frustration. They may be pretty, but they're not a group I'd choose to know, even the ones not so cruel along with their self-centered goals. I also still don't quite understand how inhabitants of their realm interact with time: does it seem brief to them (vs. the human world), or not?Still, the book was a long way from horrible. I'll keep an eye out for a deal on other books by this author, to give her another try, either with one of Alun's brother's stories, or something else.I forgot to say, it was well proofread. I didn't spot any typos, though there was one point where a type of formatting glitch I've encountered (though not understood) before occurred: several lines were skipped when I turned a page, and I had to tinker with the font size to suddenly have them appear.

I loved this book, it was funny and fun and I especially loved David. Snarky twinks are my favorite kinds of characters. I never became bored and found it hard to put down. I like reading a book that I can laugh out loud at and this definitely qualified. The author also threw in lots of odd ball references to movies and popular culture which were fun. My favorite was a sly reference to the 1956 Danny Kaye movie "The Court Jester" (which, by the way, Leonard Maltin lists in his movie & video guide as one of the best comedies ever made). When David is handed a tankard of mead with a stylized dragon handle in Faerie, he mutters "the pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon". Most people probably wouldn't get it, but I almost fell off the couch laughing. I almost didn't buy this book because of one negative review, but I'm so glad I did and this is saved in my queue to read again.

4.5/5 StarsThis review was originally posted on the Goldilox and the Three Weres blog.I'd been looking for m/m romance book with Beauty and the Beast elements for a long time when I saw All Things Urban Fantasy post a review of Cutie and the Beast. I was sold and I immediately went to see if it was still on Netgalley. Thank heavens it was! I probably gave my mouse whiplash because I requested it fast after that. And I'm happy to say that it did not disappoint my high expectations! I loved it! It was fun and cute and just plain lovely.David Evans is a mess. He seems to be a bit unlucky. Wherever he goes, chaos follows. Like riot and drunken fist fight chaos. It gotten to the point where he's been banned from actually working in an office by the temp service he works for even though he's more than qualified to do so. Thanks to an awful flu virus is going around, he gets an assignment he was never meant to have... being the office manager for a psychologist. And not just any psychologist. He's going to go work for Dr. Alun Kendrick, the doctor he's had a crush on since hearing his voice at a medical transcription job.The thing is Dr. Kendrick is not your normal psychologist. He's a fae lord who treats members of the supernatural community and the occasional supernaturally traumatized human. Alun Kendrick has been dealing with a 200 year curse that has transformed his once perfect face into that of a beast's. Despite being barred from the Seelie Court because of his ugliness, his deformed face works well for him as a therapist. His paranormal patients get to see that everything in his world hasn't been perfect.I felt for Alun during the whole book. He's one of those characters whose guilty conscience has convinced him that he's not worth being loved. Then in walks David Evans into his life and he turns everything in Alun's life upside down with his caring ways. Poor Alun has no idea what to make of him. David is awkward and he knows it. He has long since accepted it and embraced it. Despite said awkwardness, he is kind and sweet and only wants to help people. He figures as long as he isn't hurting anyone, then it's more than okay to be awkward. It seems to work because he seems to have a natural affinity for making all sorts of supernatural creatures comfortable despite being human. The book was fun and incredibly creative. It takes place in our world where no humans know that the supernaturals exist. I loved how diverse the supes were in this book! There's the fae both Seelie and Unseelie, vampires, druids, and shifters of all kinds. I also loved the mythology that surrounded this series's version of Faerie and I can't wait to learn more about it.This book is one I've added to my kindle collection since I've read it and I'm excited to reread it in the future! I loved the heck out of it and I can't wait to get my hands on the next two books that feature Alun's brothers, Mal and Gareth! I need more of the Kendrick brothers in my life!

Five stars for David. I WANT A DAVID, TOO! He's delightful! So are his aunt and her friends!!!Five stars for Alun. I didn't expect him to be so very sympathetic and believable. <3 Bonus stars for his brothers!Five stars for every beat of the plot. So much fun, so... Oh. Aw, crap. OH CRAP. Ahhhh!!!!No! Yes? YES!!! and that's on several levels, including what's really valuable about a person, power balance, and consent. I am impressed.Five stars for every named character. I can't usually say that, but even the cursory ones are memorable, so yeah. And, five stars for taking a story I didn't much care for and giving it a cutsie title I resisted for however long it's been out, and then making me write this review. Happily pwned. That's right. This is a twenty-five star novel. You have to like fun, and indomitable versus fearful, and it'll help if you like fantasy, but mostly you should just trust me. :)
